Good intentions can come with bad timing, and good boundaries can come with bad delivery.

A woman organized a weekend rental for her husband, toddler, and in-laws, where everyone agreed to eat breakfast in.

On the last morning, her sister-in-law got up early to cook for everyone and accidentally woke the woman and her toddler.

Instead of a gentle word, the woman walked out and quizzed her about the time before telling her she’d woken them.

The sister-in-law was hurt and told the woman’s husband she didn’t like how she’d been spoken to.

Now the woman is wondering whether being confrontational made her the problem.

AITAH For asking SIL not to cook at 6:45am

We went away for a weekend in a nearby city. I got a rental apartment for myself, husband, toddler, MIL, and SIL.

We decided to do breakfasts at the rental. Two mornings, I did breakfast for everyone around 7:45 a.m. when everyone was awake.

But here’s where things started getting dramatic.

The last morning, my SIL decided to start cooking at 6:30 a.m. and woke us up (me and my toddler) at 6:45 a.m., making a whole whack of noise.

I know it may sound silly, but even getting 20 extra minutes of sleep is necessary with a toddler who is not sleeping great through the night.

Her SIL didn’t enjoy being confronted about her behavior.

I came out of my room and asked her what she was doing, and she stated, “Breakfast.”

I asked her if she noticed the time, and she stated, “No.” I told her she woke us up.

Later, she was talking to my husband and stated she didn’t like how I spoke with her.

She thinks it all comes down to their communication styles.

To give a bit more context, they are from a specific background that is very, very passive and can be passive-aggressive. I am more of a direct person.

I didn’t realize me stating she woke us up was a big deal, but it seems that it was.

AITAH?

Sounds like no one in this story wants to fess up for their share.

What did Reddit think?

Maybe this woman isn’t as direct as she thinks she is.

There’s definitely a nicer way this could have been said.

This woman needs to re-familiarize herself with the term “passive aggressive.”

Some parents seem to think they can get away with just about anything just because they’re a parent.

This woman had a fair complaint and a rough delivery, and the second part is what turned breakfast into a family-wide issue.

Her sister-in-law was trying to do something nice, and a missed clock is a small mistake that deserved an equally small response.

Never underestimate the power of asking nicely.
