Not every request from a parent qualifies as an unreasonable burden, and one 16-year-old’s reaction to a fairly small ask has stirred real debate.
After her mom gave birth to her fourth child, the teen made it clear she didn’t want anything to do with babysitting duties and asked to move in with her dad.
When her mom simply asked her to keep an eye on the baby for the length of a shower, the teen refused outright, and when told she didn’t have a choice, she ran out of the house.
Her mom called her out for the reaction and asked her to come back, but the teen left for her dad’s instead, a decision that’s prompted discourse over whether one 15-minute-request really counted as babysitting.

AITA for not babysitting my half sister?
My (F16) mom recently gave birth to her 4th child.
I told her I want to live with my dad because I don’t want to be a babysitter or wake up with the baby’s noise or anything baby related.
She refused to let me.
So when her mother tried to force her will on her, she decided she was going to opt out by any means necessary.
So yesterday she asked me to babysit while she took a shower.
And I said no.
She said I don’t get a choice, so I ran outside.
She called me and said I’m an AH and asked me to come back, but I refused and went to my dad’s.
This daughter and mother couldn’t be further from the same page.
Reddit is sure to have some strong opinions.
This commenter takes issue with this teenager’s definition of babysitting.

There’s a line here, and this user isn’t convinced her mother has crossed it yet.

Watching over her younger siblings for a short amount of time is just the right thing to do.

Sometimes families have to do things they don’t like in order to help each other out.

As Redditors so articulately stated, watching a sleeping baby for fifteen minutes while a parent showers isn’t babysitting, it’s basic household cooperation that most siblings handle without a second thought.
Running outside instead of simply agreeing to something this minor reads less like standing up for a boundary and more like avoiding a small inconvenience through overreaction.
Her mom didn’t ask her to take on newborn care full time, she asked for fifteen minutes.
The teen’s response reveals a lot more about her bad attitude than it does about her mother’s parenting.
