A Young Go-Getter Upstaged Him at Work—Now He’s Just Waiting for Him to Burn Out

We all experience burnout at our jobs at some point.

Even if we absolutely love it and can’t get enough of it, at some point, you’re gonna need a break…or maybe even a permanent vacation.

The guy who wrote this story is at a crossroads in his career and he’s openly admitting that he’s DONE.

Get all the details below and see what he had to say.

I gave up on my job years ago.

“I started at the company I work at back in late 2018.

I work for a steel manufacturer – an industry that is known for not caring about the employees.

It felt like he was on-call all the time…

Over the years I began to burn out. I’d get “emergency” calls in the middle of the night, and on holidays, vacations, weekends, etc. And for several years I took the calls and came in during all sorts of weird hours.

During Covid we were temporarily allowed to work remote several days a week to slow down traffic in the office and slow the spread of disease. During this time I got a taste for what a good work life balance feels like, and it broke me.

This will do it!

Having 3 days at home during the week where I could cook myself meals and work out during the work day was life changing. But of course as Covid faded, so did the idea of being able to have those benefits.

I tried to continue doing remote work – just 1 or 2 days a month when I had things at home that needed attention, I received major push back from my boss.

My boss told me that others were jealous of me, and wanted to work remote too. But they were scared to just do it and instead gossiped about me, so I was told I could no longer do remote at all.

He made some big changes.

This was when I effectively gave up, the past several years my life has grown and I pushed work aside as the least important aspect of my life. I got married, bought a house, got a dog, the 40+ hours being asked of me every week started to feel like too much, and for far too little pay.

I never realized how hard having a demanding job is when your life outgrows it. My work performance slipped further and further down, to the point of me only doing things when directly asked.

Fast forward to this year, my employer hired another person in my department after I was the entire department for 7 years. This new hire got hired on making either the same as me, or slightly more. And of course, they also get a different tier of bonuses that I was never offered.

Have at it, buddy!

They are young and extremely motivated so they’ve basically taken on all of the work while I sit around. The years of sacrifice I gave to this company were never rewarded, and now everyone here can’t stand me and loves the new hire.

The one good thing about my job is the stock bonuses and retirement account, so I haven’t quit because I wanted to net as many years paying into this 401k as I can. But I’m close to leaving I feel, assuming they don’t fire me first.

But it’s depressing seeing a young employee so filled with life, and energy doing the things I used to do, and everyone is just using them up before they burn out.

This company clearly just loves to use up young people and spit them out.”

Well, one thing’s for sure…

He needs to find another place to work!

A change is in order, sir!

This guy’s work situation is a HUGE bummer.
