They’ve Only Been Roommates for Four Days—But His Roommate’s Selfish Behavior Is Putting His Health at Risk

When you move in with a stranger, you can never truly know what to expect, even if you’ve toured the house, seen your room, and met the person (or people) already. Because first impressions are one thing, but when you are actually living life alongside someone you get to see all the sides to their personality. And while sometimes this can be a good thing – many folk meet lifelong friends by being roommates first – sometimes it means that after a few days or weeks you get to know something about a roommate that really makes you dislike them – or worse.

The worst part? If you signed a long lease, you’re stuck with these weird folk that you’ve moved in with, until one of your either leaves at the end of your contract, or chooses to break it entirely. And that can be a costly decision to make.

The guy in this story moved into his current apartment four days ago. And by the sounds of it, they have been four excruciating days. That’s because his roommate is beyond selfish, and his actions are actually causing this guy physical pain.

Read on to find out why.

My roommate keeps turning a migraine trigger light on when I’m asleep, am I overreacting?

My roommate has a small weed setup in my room that I moved into four days ago.

Despite there being a wall-sized window behind it, he continually says they don’t get enough light and that he needs to have a lamp on for all of the daylight hours.

Unfortunately, the bulb is an incredibly obnoxious, high intensity, antiseptic blue and the first time I tried to be nice and put up with it, I ended up with a migraine in full bloom under an hour.

So I explained that I’ve suffered migraines that quite literally take me out of commission since I was a child and that the light is a migraine trigger and asked him not to turn it on.

Uh-oh. And this isn’t the only problem he has with this roommate.

To get around that, he’s now waiting until I’m asleep.

I took a nap yesterday because he keeps doing this in the early hours of the morning before I’m up, so when I wake up and can feel the pounding behind my eyelids I know the light’s been on a while and woke up to it on.

He did it again this morning.

I only get five sumatriptans a month and I pay $50 for the pleasure.

Yikes. It has been four days and he’s already sick of this obnoxious roommate.

I was awoken just now to him doing it again.

I repeated that “don’t turn it on in my room” means “don’t wait for an opportunity to turn it on despite me asking you not to do that.”

Now I’m up earlier than I wanted to be because my roommate can’t honor a basic request and he didn’t even respond or anything, so I’m assuming this is going to be a problem in the future.

Am I overreacting?

Wow. If anything, this guy is under-reacting.

His roommate is deliberately choosing actions that he knows will cause his roommate a migraine, all because he can’t bear to relocate or not give as much light to his mini weed farm.

That is… so not okay.

Let’s see what folks on Reddit made of this.

This person thought it was crazy that his roommate wasn’t growing his weed in his own room.

Look, presuming it’s legal, this guy’s roommate can do whatever he wants – in his own room, that is. In common areas like the kitchen, bathroom and living room, he needs to be more sociable, but in this guy’s bedroom. Yeah, he has no right to be doing anything in there whatsoever, let alone growing weed or operating lights that are going to give this guy a migraine.

Regardless of whether or not growing weed is legal where these guys live, the fact that he is growing weed in his roommate’s bedroom is beyond inconsiderate, it’s terrible roommate behaviour. But repeatedly operating the grow lights, when the guy has warned him of his health condition, shows what a selfish, horrible person he really is.

Four days is long enough – he needs to get out of there.
