He’s Taken Their Son to School Every Friday for Years — This Time, He ‘Forgot,’ Leaving the Boy Home Alone for Hours

When you, as an adult, choose to marry and have children with another adult, there are certain expectations that you might have in mind. And these things seem so straightforward that you likely don’t even think you need to discuss them. Your adult spouse will take care of themselves and their share of the housework, and they will take on half of the responsibility for taking care of your child too – that is, presuming that you are both working full time. Otherwise it is logical for the part time worker to take on a little more of the balance of responsibility.
So imagine the horror of the wife in this story when, hours after starting work herself, she found out that her husband left for work without taking care of one vital responsibility – something that is his responsibility on that same day every week, and has been for years. His excuse? Well, she didn’t remind him.
Read on to find out what happened here.
AITA for going to work this morning and not specifically telling my husband that he needed to take our child to school?
I am in-office for work every Friday. I leave the house at 6am (before anyone else in the house is awake) to be at work by 7am, that’s the way it’s been for three years.
In these last three years, my husband has always taken our son (seven years old) to school every Friday (school starts at 8:30am).
My husband lost his job a few months ago and recently found a part-time job waiting tables at a cafe, because of this, his schedule varies.
Today (Friday), he’s working 9am to 5pm.
Let’s see how this drama got started.
Today, my husband got ready for work and noticed our son was awake and watching TV.
My husband asked our son if I had gone out to get coffee, son said ‘yes’ (not sure why, again, I leave before I see or speak to anyone), so my husband took that as fact and just left and went to work.
By the time I got the automated call from the school stating he was marked absent, my son had been alone for almost three hours.
I called the school to verify that our son was there (but possibly late, because that isn’t unusual for my husband, unfortunately), and to my horror, he was NOT at school.
Yikes! Let’s see how she dealt with this.
I called my husband as I was (literally) running out of my office, in a ditch effort, hoping they stayed home together (maybe son was sick?) but nope!
My husband’s response: “When were you going to tell me I had to take him to school? How was I supposed to do that when I have work at 9am?”
My response: “And how am I supposed to take him to school at 8:30 when I have work at 7? Why would you assume I hadn’t gone to work when this has been my schedule for years now?”
“And as the last adult to leave the house, once you noticed I wasn’t here, you should have called me to verify instead of taking the word of our seven year old son that I had gone to get coffee!”
Now, her husband does not see things the way she does.
But of course, he doesn’t see it that way and is adamant that I’m at fault here and they didn’t need to verify anything.
Sure, I could have verified with them last night, since my husband now has a shifting schedule. But since I have to leave for work hours before our son even has to be at school, I don’t see why that would fall on me.
And I still maintain that as the last adult to leave the house, upon noticing I was gone, responsibility fell on my husband to verify before leaving a seven year old child home by themselves.
All it would have taken was a text or phone call to make sure I was in fact taking our son to school. But instead, son was left home alone for three hours.
Read on to find out how things were when she got home.
Unfortunately, my son was very distressed when I got home, crying and panicked.
He even wailed “Dad just left me!” (as he is also fully aware I am never home on Fridays).
It took me some time to calm him down.
AITA?
There is absolutely no way that this mom has done anything wrong here – she should be able to assume that, as another adult, her husband will remember to take their son to school, or at the very least not leave him unattended when he goes to work.

Yet again all the mental load falls upon the woman, because her husband is an overgrown child himself who won’t take responsibility for anything.
Then he has the audacity to blame her? This is unbelievable.
Let’s see what the Reddit community had to say about this.
This person made clear how ridiculous her husband’s reasoning was.

And others couldn’t believe how ridiculous he’d been.

If you enjoyed this story, check out this post about a man who had to sprint to the bathroom the moment he got home, then emerged to find his partner upset he didn’t greet her properly.
Meanwhile, others recommended she document this for their inevitable divorce.

The very fact that he left their son home alone and didn’t even bother to contact his wife to verify the arrangement is beyond irresponsible. It’s active neglect of the needs of a child, who was understandably very distressed after being home alone for three hours. Let’s be honest, a seven year old child watching cartoons is not a reliable source of information, and by basing his entire course of action on this, the dad showed just how unreliable he is in the care of a child.
Given it was Friday and it was about time for him to start work, why weren’t alarm bells ringing in his head that his child wasn’t yet at school – and maybe, just maybe, it was his responsibility to take the child to school, as happened every Friday? Well, because this father is not mature or responsible enough to be a parent, largely because he likely spent the entire marriage expecting his wife to take care of everything. Well, he’ll have to figure it out soon because after their inevitable divorce dad’s going to have to learn to take care of himself.
