In this incredible series of sculptures, artist Giuseppe Penone carefully removes the rings of growth to reveal the ‘sapling within’. By carving out the inside of a tree trunk and leaving the knots in place, they eventually emerge as tiny limbs shown above.

Giuseppe Penone (born April 3, 1947) is an Italian artist that started working professionally in 1968 in the Garessio forest, near where he was born. He is a younger member of the Italian movement named “Arte Povera”, this term was coined by Germano Celant. Penone’s work is concerned with establishing a contact between man and nature. He is still very active and produces lots of original works every year. [Source: Wikipedia]
