Picture of the Day: The World’s Largest Stockpile of Wood
THE WORLD’S LARGEST STOCKPILE OF WOOD
According to Gizmodo, this massive stockpile was the result of a huge category 1 hurricane that hit Sweden and Denmark on January 8, 2005. The name of the hurricane was Gudrun and it blew at sustained speeds of 78.3 mph (126 km/h) and gusts up to 102.5 mph (165 km/h). Not only did this natural disaster kill 22 people it levelled a staggering 75 million cubic meters of tree.
Just how much is that? Imagine this picture and multiply it 75 times and you’re in the ballpark. The startling photo above is the Swedish government’s attempt to process the mess the hurricane left behind. This stockpile is called Bhyolma and in 2005 it became the largest stockpile of timber in the world. [Source: Gizmodo]
