FRIGID FALLS

In this beautiful capture we see the famous Niagara Falls on a frosty winter day. The photograph, by Shaheen Karolia, was taken on January 2nd, 2014. According to FriendlyForecast, the weather that day was between -10 and -15 degrees Celsius (14 – 5 degrees Fahrenheit).

The timing of this photo as today’s POTD is apt as yesterday, this photo was widely circulated online as Niagara Falls being frozen. While the phenomena does occur, the image was actually from 2011. Of course that didn’t stop the image from being spread as if it was current. You can read more about the ‘frozen falls image’ over on The Atlantic.

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States; more specifically, between the province of Ontario and the state of New York. They form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. Pictured above is Horseshoe Falls.
