Picture of the Day: Hong Kong Stands Up
by twistedsifter
In a watershed moment for Hong Kong, tens of thousands of citizens protested across the city on Monday; blocking roadways, prompting closures and disrupting daily life. According to The Guardian:
Hong Kong enjoys considerable autonomy under the “one country, two systems” framework and has long been promised universal suffrage for the election of the next chief executive in 2017. But protesters are furious that the rules announced by Beijing will impose such tight controls on candidates that a democrat could not even stand. They see the decision as part of a broader attempt to tighten controls on the region. [source]
It’s being dubbed the ‘Umbrella Revolution’ in the press, in reference to protesters using umbrellas to shield themselves whenever they feared a tear gas or pepper spray attack was coming. Citizens seem to be divided on the protests, as the disruption has proven frustrating for many trying to go about their daily lives. Events are ongoing and it will be interesting to see what happens as a result of the continued protests. For live updates you can follow occupycentral.appledaily.com for more.
