When you move to a new city – whether that’s for college, a new job, or any other reason – there’s a whole lot to think about, especially if you’re moving there alone. For starters, where to live? There are a lot of variables here, mostly depending on your budget and the proximity from your school or workplace that you’re looking for. But more than that, you’ll likely want to know that you’ll be safe and that the accommodation within your budget will be secure and liveable at the very least.

Of course, if you’re a single person on a budget, you’ll most likely be living with roommates, which introduces even more questions. What are they like? Will they be kind and respectful or noisy and rude? Will they accept you the way you are? Will you and your possessions be safe and welcome, or will you have a less pleasant experience. Will you see eye to eye and make friends, or will you bicker and end up arguing over petty things most of the time. Ideally of course, you’ll end up living with folk that – even if you don’t see eye to eye on everything – are decent and respectful at the very least.

However for the student in this story, rude and disrespectful roommates have been the biggest issue since moving to New York for college.

Read on to find out why.

AITA and a bad roommate?

I’m 19 years old and have high functioning Aspergers. I try as hard as I possibly can to be a good person and kind to people, but sometimes I honestly can’t tell when I’ve done something wrong so I need to ask.

I go to college in NYC and my parents pay my tuition and rent but NOTHING besides that. So no money for transportation, books, utilities, clothing, etc., that’s all me.

I’ve honestly gone some weeks where I didn’t eat anything but a loaf of bread, I’m not saying that for sympathy it’s just how it is and I’m making it work.

I can’t afford to live alone so I have to find roommates and it’s not easy. Finally I found two 22 year old guys who recently graduated from a suburban private college and moved to NYC.

Let’s see how the living situation situation is.

They seemed nice at first. But I’ve been living with them for two months and they seem to absolutely loathe me. I don’t know why because I do all the obvious things (clean, don’t leave dishes around, pay rent on time) and I’m not home much.

Recently I came home and sat at the dinner table ONCE to do homework while they watched TV. I only sat in one chair and had one book and notebook in front of me, and didn’t ask them to change anything.

One of them said to me angrily, “You know, you can’t just take up the dinner table with your work. You’re not the only one that lives here and that table isn’t for that.” I apologized and moved to my room.

They play cards and games at that table all the time, besides eating, but weren’t just then.

And that wasn’t the end of their horrible behaviour.

One time I came home and one of them came home just after me. A few minutes later they “confronted” me and told me I had put something that smelled disgusting in the kitchen garbage. I told them I didn’t and just got home.

They repeatedly insisted that I had and wanted to know what it was because it reeked. I promised I didn’t and they kept saying I should just admit it and what I had done was really disgusting. I told them I didn’t and had no idea what else to do.

Another time I got home and they told me they had bought new curtains for the apartment and “my portion” that I “owed” was $60. I told them I didn’t have $60 and they said tell my parents I owe it. I said my parents don’t just give me money and they said they didn’t believe me at all and

I still owe them the $60. I literally didn’t eat for days and sold several things while I was trying to find the money. I had to borrow some from my boyfriend.

And when it came to the aforementioned boyfriend, the roommates had some opinions.

They have also horribly mocked my boyfriend, he has Aspergers too but he’s the sweetest person on earth, but they think he is annoying and weird.

Plus they have told me I’m really weird and awkward and make people uncomfortable.

They have also told me I have an easy life and should never complain about anything because they have to work while my parents support me. I said I have to work too and they said “must be nice to still have Mommy and Daddy paying rent.”

AITA and a horrible roommate for these things?

Honestly, these two roommates sound like awful people.

It sucks that this student has to live with them right now, and a fresh start should be on the cards as soon as possible.

Because there’s no way that this student is the problem.

Let’s see what folks on Reddit made of this.

This person thought that the guys were bullying the student.

These two guys that the student is living with are clearly completely insufferable bullies that have very little care for anything but their own amusement. When you share a home with other people – regardless of whether they’re strangers you’re living with as roommates, or friends or family that you’re living with – respect is one of the most important factors. Mutual respect. And they clearly have no intention of respecting their roommate whatsoever.

Whether it’s that they’re picking on them because they have Aspergers, or whether it’s that they simply chose a target, maybe someone who was a bit different to them, and are now bullying them for their own amusement, it’s an abhorrent way to behave. It’s something that you expect to see of middle schoolers, and it’s not even okay then – as adults, there is absolutely no way that this is anything other than disgusting behaviour towards a disabled person.

The roommates are horrible people, and that’s the truth of this.
