Talking behind someone’s back tends to backfire when the person you’re talking about is still in earshot.

A woman caught her cousin mocking her outfits to their aunt and claiming she only acted confident to fish for compliments. She was shocked, and she wasn’t about to let this disrespect slide.

So she decided to confront her cousin in front of everyone and asked if she had something to tell her. Her cousin went silent and claimed her words were taken out of context.

That’s when her aunt took her cousin’s side and said she’d ruined the gathering for everyone.

Keep reading for the full story.

AITA for refusing to pretend I didn’t hear what my cousin said about me?

My cousin came over last weekend, and we were all hanging out in the living room. At some point, I went to the kitchen to grab something, and I heard her talking to my aunt about me.

Her cousin said some pretty cruel things.

She was making fun of the way I dress and saying I only act confident because I want people to compliment me. I honestly just stood there for a few seconds because I couldn’t believe she was saying that.

Afterwards, she gave her cousin an opportunity to be upfront with her, and that’s when her cousin started trying to walk everything back.

I walked back into the room and asked her if she had something she wanted to tell me. She immediately went quiet and started saying I was taking things out of context.

I told her I heard everything and wasn’t going to sit there pretending it didn’t bother me.

Now her aunt is somehow blaming her for the whole ordeal.

My aunt later said I embarrassed her in front of everyone and should’ve talked to her privately.

I don’t think I should have to act clueless just to keep the peace, but now some family members are saying I made the whole gathering awkward.

If this family wanted a peaceful gathering, they should try not gossiping about someone who was right behind them.

Redditors are sure to get a kick out of this one.

Rude people deserve to be called out.

Someone should have taught this cousin manners. Oh, wait…

Public gossip, public confrontation.

Sometimes embarrassment is the only way to teach a lesson.

This woman is ultimately getting punished for having ears. She walked into the kitchen, heard people she was supposed to be close with tearing her down, and now she’s just supposed to be okay with it? That’s not how real life works.

She shouldn’t have been forced to swallow the insult simply to keep the peace. If her cousin has something to say to her, she should say it with her chest out.

You can’t whisper something cruel then expect to get off scot-free.
