AITA for telling my son’s dad he can’t just invite kids to his birthday party.

My son’s dad and I have not been together since our son was born.

Our son lives with me full-time.

I cover all of his day-to-day expenses.

His paternal grandmother pays his school fees.

This woman organized her son’s birthday party.

I organized my son’s birthday party for this weekend with his school friends and some of my friends’ children.

Invitations were sent out well in advance. Everyone was asked to RSVP by 1 July.

Based on those RSVPs, I paid the venue. I ordered food, arranged seating, and bought party packs, ice cream, and everything else for a specific number of children.

There is not extra seating or extra party packs available.

Her ex-husband informed her that he invited another parent and a child to the party.

I also invited my son’s dad. I wanted him to be there to celebrate his son’s birthday with us.

Today, just three days before the party, he messaged me.

He told me that he had invited another parent and their child to the party.

He did not ask if it was okay first. He had already invited them.

She told him they could not come because everything has been arranged.

I told him they could not come because I had not planned or paid for any additional guests.

I also said I did not think it would be fair for a child to attend a birthday party.

They would only watch the other kids receive meals, party packs, ice cream, and other treats. There would not be enough for them.

He thought she was being selfish and unreasonable.

He thinks I am being unreasonable.

But I feel like he overstepped by inviting people to an event that I planned and paid for. He did this without asking me first.

Bear in mind, I have never even met these people.

AITA?

Uh oh! Inviting extra people to someone else’s fully planned event is a big overstep.

I think OP’s concern about fairness to the kids and logistics makes total sense, and I agree with her setting firm boundaries.
