Sometimes setting a simple boundary can unexpectedly hurt a friend’s feelings.

In this story, a man has a friend whose house and cars are infested with cockroaches and cat fleas.

To protect his home, he asked his friend to avoid bringing his backpack inside.

But his friend became offended and said he felt completely unwelcome in the man’s home.

Would you have reacted the same? Check out the full details below.

AITA asking my friend if they could not bring their bag into my house?

My friend (35M) is living at home while he tries to make it in the industry.

His family home is basically a health hazard, as it is totally infested with roaches.

There are multiple cat births happening constantly, so there is also a flea problem, and it is a hoarder house.

I was in his car at night one time, and I saw about 15 roaches crawling around his car.

So, of course, I was grossed out.

This man politely asked his friend not to bring his bag inside the house.

I later found out that the other car he uses is also infested with German roaches.

After learning this, I asked him politely if he didn’t mind not bringing his backpack into my place.

I prefaced that I was sorry if it seemed neurotic.

His friend also had mentioned to me that my friend’s computer had been completely destroyed due to their roach problem.

So, I know it’s a serious infestation.

His friend got offended and told him he would never go to his place again.

My friend got so offended that I asked him this.

Later, when drunk, he told me, “I’m never going in your place again.

I draw a line in the sand there, and it feels totally unwelcome.”

I tried to calmly and politely tell him that he is welcome in my home.

But I felt like we needed to be careful with bags just because of the situation logistically.

Eew! Reading it can already give you the creeps.

I honestly think that asking someone to be careful with the belongings they want to bring inside someone else’s house is a reasonable precaution.

The friend may have felt embarrassed, but OP’s request was more about protecting his home rather than making him feel unwelcome.

Wanting to protect your home from an infestation doesn’t mean you think less of someone.
