She Meant to Ask “How Is Your Day Going?” and “What Is Your Name?”—Then Accidental Word-Salad Made Her Ask a Stunned Customer “What Are You?”

Sometimes, the words come out of your mouth before your brain catches up.
That’s exactly what happened to one grocery store cashier when she tried to greet a customer early in her shift.
She was feeling tired, but she still wanted to be friendly and ask about his plans for the day.
Only this time, she mixed up her usual questions and ended up asking something she never meant to say.
She caught her mistake right away, but the customer’s reaction made it a moment she wouldn’t forget.

Probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve said to a customer before.
I work as a cashier at a grocery store. As we all know, customer service comes with communicating with customers. From a cashier role, that consists of asking people how they’re doing, what they’ve been up to, etc.
Now, there was one day when I had probably only been on till for half an hour. I think it was an early shift that day because I remember feeling pretty tired.
My usual shtick when it comes to greeting customers is, “Hello, how are you?” And then asking, “What do you have planned for the rest of your day?” to get a conversation started.
She knew what she meant to say, but that’s not what came out.
However, my brain mixed up all the words when I greeted this one man, and what I ended up saying instead was, “Hello. What are you?”
I realized what I’d said almost immediately and tried to correct myself. The man just stared at me for a moment before starting to laugh.
It was pretty funny, but I have never felt that embarrassed while on till.
That’s hilarious! It could’ve been worse. At least the guy laughed.

It’s happened so many times, this person can’t even remember all of them.
Now, that’s pretty funny.

Luckily, she said it to someone who was able to laugh about it rather than getting upset.
It’s embarrassing enough to hear yourself say something like that without someone making a big deal out of it.
Perhaps the best part is that they both walked away with a funny story to tell.
