It is illegal for underage people to sell alcohol in the United States, so when a customer needs to buy it, they generally just get a supervisor or an older coworker to complete the transaction.

That is what happened to the young man in this story when he was in the middle of checking out an older lady, and he realized that she had beer in her cart.

Unfortunately, as soon as he explained that she would have to hold on a moment until his supervisor arrived, she became infuriated and started yelling at him.

I work in a large busy store as a cashier.

The store has a system in place.

I am under the legal age to sell alcohol in my state, so I generally page my supervisor to override and complete the sale.

No problem, done in 30 sec. Until there is these people.

A nice customer comes up.

So, it is about 7 on a Friday night, and as busy as its ever been. I’m up at my register, doing my thing, and this nice older woman comes up.

“Hi there!” She says to me. Pleasantries are exchanged. A few moments later, she looks at me and asks if I’m still in school.

Oh, he’ll have to call his supervisor to ring up the beer.

I tell her I am in HS and she nods approvingly. “Good to see young people not freeloading off their parents and making their own money” …. Back in my day… Blah….

We reach the end of her items and then she tells me there is a case of beer on the bottom of her cart.

Wow, her attitude took a quick turn.

This was impossible for me to see, so I page a super and tell her she will have to wait.

Her response, nearly verbatim- “What the heck? Why the heck did they hire someone who can’t sell alcohol? And you! Why the heck did you apply?!”

Manager shows up, calms her down, rest of shift without incident.

At least the manager was able to calm her down. You have to wonder what is wrong with some people.
