Picture of the Day: Urban Raptor
URBAN RAPTOR
In this awesome photo by Jes (mugley on Flickr) we see a Nankeen Kestrel (Falco cenchroides) perched on a railing in Melbourne, Australia.
The Australian Kestrel or Nankeen Kestrel is one of the smallest falcons, and unlike many, does not rely on speed to catch its prey. The raptor can be found in Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, and is an irregular visitor to New Zealand. They are considered a small and slim falcon (about 31 to 35 centimetres or 12 to 14 inches long) with a varied diet including: insects, small birds, rodents and reptiles. [Source]
