Takeshi Murata’s Hypnotic Liquid Metal Orb
At Frieze New York 2014, Ratio 3 debuted Melter 3-D (64 x 22 x 22 inches), a sculptural animation by Takeshi Murata. Presented as a single object under controlled lighting, Melter 3-D is a metallic sphere that produces the illusion of perpetual liquid flow across its surface. In an interview with Visionaire, Murata explains:
“It animates in real-world space using the same principles of a classic zoetrope, except it uses strobe lights instead of slits. I designed the objects with CAD software and it was produced using a CNC mill.”
