It’s frustrating when someone keeps telling you there’s room to move up, but nothing ever changes.

One steakhouse employee reached that point after spending two years as a back waiter and earning plenty of praise for his work.

His manager told him a serving position could be coming soon, so he waited.

But then, the restaurant started hiring new servers from outside instead.

Fed up, he finally called the managers out in front of everyone.

AITA for calling out my managers at work?

I (20M) work at a high-end steakhouse. I’ve been working there for two years now as a back waiter, and for the longest time I’ve always gotten compliments from customers, servers, managers, etc. for my work ethic and pride in my work.

Now I am in college, and classes are very expensive.

I also want to be able to live more comfortably and maybe even move out of my parents’ place into my own. So I’ve always thought being a server would be a great opportunity to do that because I’ve seen how much they take home every night.

When he saw they were hiring, he let them know how it made him feel.

One evening, I went into the office at my work and talked to my manager to address becoming a server. He told me that I’ve been doing a great job and that he wanted to make me a server soon.

Now fast forward a couple of months, and they are hiring new servers/bartenders. When I noticed, the first thing I said when I walked in, in front of my managers and the rest of my employees, was, “I guess we don’t promote anyone here?”

Everyone just kind of looked at me and didn’t say anything. It must have been kind of shocking because I do typically keep my cool, and I’m very nice and giddy most every day.

AITA?

Wow! That would be totally devasting.

So, instead of waiting around for something that may never happen, perhaps it’s time to find a new place that’ll give him the opportunities he’s looking for.
