Her Manager Has Manipulated Her for Months—Now She Wants to Quit, but Feels Guilty Leaving Her Team Behind

There comes a point when staying loyal to a job starts costing you too much.
One customer service employee reached that point after realizing her manager had been lying about what the rest of the team supposedly said about her.
Then, when a family emergency forced her to take a few days off, the manager accused her of lying and hurting the team.
That was enough to make her seriously consider walking away.
Still, she feels guilty knowing her coworkers would be left even more short-staffed.
Read on to see exactly what’s been going on.
WIBTA if I(25F) quit my job and leave my team to struggle after my manager continuously tried to manipulate me?
I currently work for a distribution company in the customer service department. We have a small team of 6, including my manager. I’ve been working with them since August last year.
The issue is that my manager (41F) likes drama and stirs it up, despite saying she hates it and anything to do with it.
She also has issues with keeping things confidential and tells all other departments if you have any “issues” that she knows about. She talks as if she is on your side but will talk behind your back the next.
The manager has not made working there easy.
There was an incident last year where she brought me into a room, told me my entire team disliked me and complained about me behind my back, and even included names of who said what.
She then proceeded to ostracize me by having me sit directly next to her.
At one point, I suffered a severe mental breakdown because I didn’t feel like I could trust anyone, and I felt like a burden to my team. I even purposely avoided team and company gatherings because of this.
I recently found out from team members that what she had said to me was a load of ******** and that they had experienced similar incidents with her where she would make them feel like crap about themselves and like they had no one to trust as well.
Now, family issues take precedence over her job, and the manager is not happy.
Fast forward to now, I had some very sudden and unexpected family issues, and I have taken a few days off work to handle them.
Despite my manager knowing what’s going on, she is angry at me for taking time off and is also claiming my story “doesn’t make sense” to insist I’m lying about certain things. She’s saying I’m causing harm to the team and making the team stress out more because I haven’t come into work.
I understand she’s like that because we are missing a couple of team members. However, my priority is my family and our safety.
WIBTA?

Yes, going to HR is a good idea.

She needs to get out of there.
Her manager has already messed with her head enough, and now she’s trying to make her feel guilty for dealing with something serious at home.
Rather than staying and dealing with more drama, she’s better off just looking for a new job.
Life’s too short to deal with all that anyway.
