Customer behavior can make or break a workplace.

In this story, a manager working in hotels for years noticed a growing problem in the industry.

He had witnessed guests who were trying to scam free nights by exaggerating small issues like stains or peeling paint.

These situations frustrate both him and his hardworking team as complaints pile up.

Have you experienced the same? Check out the full details below.

The new reality of running a hotel

I have been in the hotel industry for over 15 years now. I have been a hotel GM or HM for the last five years.

I love the job. I love the chaotic stuff that happens when you do not expect it.

I love thinking that it is all going to get messy all of the time.

Then, I love having a good day. It is like trauma therapy daily.

This manager noticed that a lot of guests were trying to “scam” them.

One thing I have noticed, though, is the increase in guests. They come to the hotel just to scam us out of a free night.

I had someone check in. Within 15 minutes, they had managed to pull the sheets far enough back.

They wanted to see the bare mattress. They sent us a zoomed-in picture of a little stain.

Then, they demanded a full refund.

Another lady wanted a full refund.

A day later, it was a lady. She wanted a full refund. She said there was a bit of paint peeling. It was from the manhole cover in her room.

She yelled, “Mould!” This is the only thing that really gets me.

The team is working hard. They are trying their best. Then, people come in and slam them online.

He thinks these kinds of customers make their work and life miserable.

They do it just to get a free room or to negotiate a free room.

It is whenever the rates go down, the weird ones come out. They make our lives miserable.

Is anyone else feeling the increase in scammy guests?

Uh oh! This sounds exhausting to deal with.

I think not only in the hotel industry, but people will try to scam other businesses if they can.

Asking for a full refund over tiny issues is wild. This seems unfair to a team that’s trying its best.
