“Must Be Nice Not to Work!”: Customer Walks Out of Bakery After Cashier’s Rude Morning Remark

If a store is open, the employees should probably expect customers to come in.
One woman dealt with that after stopping at a bakery around 8:45 in the morning for a few pastries.
At first, she quietly waited while the cashier finished what she was doing.
Then, the cashier started complaining about customers showing up and questioned why they weren’t at work.
So, the woman decided she wasn’t spending her money there after all.

This morning, at around 8:45 a.m., I went to a small bakery to buy some takeaway pastries.
As I arrived, the cashier was preparing some sandwiches with her back turned toward me. I did not want to interrupt her and just stood there, silently and patiently waiting for her to finish.
After about a minute, she looked up, saw me, and mumbled to herself, “Can’t they let me finish anything!?”
At first, she tried to ignore the comments.
I ignored it and said in a friendly tone, “Hello, I would like this and that, please.”
No answer from her.
While wrapping my order, she mumbled, “Does no one around here have a job!?”
Upset, she decided to question the cashier.
A bit taken aback, I was like, “Excuse me, did you mean me with that?”
She answered, “Customers are coming in constantly. At this time, they should be at work somewhere.”
I just said, “Well, then I am definitely not going to buy anything here. This is ridiculous.”
Fed up, she walked out.
And then I left the bakery.
I consider myself as patient, friendly, and understanding as it gets. Everyone is allowed to have a bad day, and I do not expect service personnel to be friendly at all. I would say that it is almost impossible to offend me.
However, what she said was so rude for no reason that, for the first time in my life, I just left a store.
Just… wow! Imagine disliking your job that much.

That cashier was way out of line.
If the bakery is open, people are going to come in. It’s not her place to question why they aren’t somewhere else.
Maybe she was having a bad morning, but taking it out on a customer who was standing there quietly makes no sense.
Either way, if she really hates seeing customers that early, this probably isn’t the right job for her.
