Covering for someone once feels harmless enough, but when it becomes a pattern, it can start to feel like a full-time job with no end in sight.

One woman agreed to a simple favor for her sister: lying to their parents about what she was really doing on the weekend. The woman was under strict instructions: tell her parents she was just traveling for business. But the real reason her sister was away still remained a mystery.

So what started as an occasional cover story became a recurring one, with their parents now asking pointed, specific questions she has no real answers for.

When she finally said she couldn’t keep dodging questions about a secret she doesn’t even understand, her sister accused her of abandoning her halfway through.

My sister (34) and I (29) have always been close, and about six months ago she asked me for a favor that I agreed to without thinking it through properly.

Her sister isn’t a big fan of being transparent with their parents.

She started taking weekend trips a few times a month and asked me to tell our parents, if they ever asked, that she was traveling for work.

She said it was easier than explaining the real reason, which she never fully clarified to me either, just that it was personal and she wasn’t ready to talk about it with them yet.

I went along with it a few times because it seemed harmless enough.

But lately keeping up the lie has put this woman in a difficult spot.

But it’s kept happening, and now our parents have started asking me directly for details, like which company sends her on so many trips, or why her job suddenly requires this much travel when it never did before.

I’ve been vague and noncommittal, but I’m running out of ways to dodge specific questions without either making something up on the spot or admitting I don’t actually know what’s going on.

So she makes her feelings known to her sister, but her sister doesn’t understand where she’s coming from at all.

Last week I told my sister I wasn’t comfortable continuing this, especially since I don’t even know what I’m covering for anymore, and that our parents were starting to ask me pointed questions I couldn’t keep deflecting.

She got upset and said I was going back on something I already agreed to, and that I was making things harder for her by backing out now instead of just sticking with the story a little longer until she figured out how to tell them herself.

She continues to push back against her sister’s unfair expectations.

I told her I never signed up to be her permanent cover story, especially not indefinitely and without knowing what I’m actually hiding.

She said I was being unsupportive and that real siblings wouldn’t put a time limit on helping each other out.

AITA for refusing to keep covering for her without knowing what I’m actually covering for?

Her sister really needs to look inward and examine why she’s so intent on keeping such a pointless secret.

Lying to anyone isn’t easy, especially when it’s people like your parents who know your tells better than anyone.

Real support doesn’t require signing up to maintain an unknown secret indefinitely.
