When you move into a new place you might have a lot of hopes and dreams for your life there. Maybe that’s the place where you’ll fall in love, where you’ll have or raise your family, maybe it’s the place where you and your friends will hang out, maybe it’s your first taste of freedom, or perhaps it’s just a place you’ll go home and relax after a hard day at work.

But sometimes things don’t work out as we’d hoped – and more often than not, like the couple in this story, there is literally nothing we could have done to prevent it.

Because when they moved into their new apartment with their dog, they were nothing but polite and well mannered – yes, even their pet. But that didn’t stop one particular neighbour taking an instant dislike to them. Then, that dislike became much more, blowing up into a really hostile living situation.

What to do…

I live in an apartment building that has maybe fourteen units. At least five have dogs (pets are allowed).

We just moved in four months ago and ever since then, a neighbor has continuously verbally complained about our existence. They have repeatedly stated that we are single handedly making the entire building gross.

They said that we let our dog pee and poop in the front yard and make it smell. They have accused us of letting our dog pee in the hallway of our building. They have said the whole building smells like dog but it’s just because of us.

Then they cussed me out this morning just because they saw me taking my dog for a walk. We are a young couple and this is an older individual that lives alone.

Let’s see how this couple really behaves with their dogs.

I am completely obsessive about picking up poop because that’s how I was raised. Even the not so solid poop I try to clean up entirely from peoples yards.

Unfortunately for us, our dog has never peed or pooped right outside the door. He’s a walker. He has to sniff everything and would never turn around and come back if we didn’t make him. It would be great if in a rush I could get him to do it but he won’t unless he’s literally not been out over 24 hours (which does not happen).

I also am an obsessive cleaner, candle lighter and scent sprayer. Our apartment does not smell (we’ve asked trustworthy people), so by no means is it spreading to the hallway. Multiple dogs walk through the halls, so if it smells like dog you simply cannot attribute that to one person.

There was a small puddle of water in the hallway from a water bottle that WAS because of us, but my boyfriend was helping me with a bad situation and he went back out to clean it up afterwards and he announced that it was simply water.

Of course, this couple aren’t claiming that their dogs are complete angels all the time.

Yes… I know it’s crazy, but our dog has barked a few times. Worst case scenario, I know. But he only barks if someone knocks on our door or if the dog across the hall barks at our door in the hallway.

We keep our dog locked in the hallway of our apartment away from the front door now, because we’re hoping that makes it better while we’re gone.

If we are in the apartment, he does not bark. He’s a sleeper. He is also slowly dying of cancer at the moment, so he doesn’t even have the energy to be as bad as this one single person is saying he is.

We have asked the neighbors across from us if they have any issues at all and they said no and were very kind to us. And their dog is the cutest thing ever.

But that doesn’t seem to have got through to the problem neighbour.

This person has screamed up and down the hallway about how terrible of people we are, but they don’t even know our names and we don’t know theirs.

They keep saying LOUDLY in the hallway they’re going to call management and get us evicted, but they don’t have any legit complaints about us except for maybe the few barks our dog has done while we’re at work. I promise he’s not the only dog who has barked in this building.

Do we do anything or wait to see if management actually contacts us with concerns? We don’t think they answer when this person calls, because they complain about everything.

It feels like this problem neighbour has got a vendetta against this couple and their dogs for no good reason.

Whether it’s a misunderstanding, discrimination, or whether the individual simply has nothing else to do with their time, this is not acceptable.

In fact, with the yelling down the hallway and constant, unfounded accusations, this is nothing short of harassment.

While others encouraged them to keep detailed records of the harassment they were facing.

It’s a shame that people – in this case, decent, caring pet owners – are having to live their lives facing constant harassment from someone they’ve literally done nothing to bother. Like, they don’t even know one another by name, this person has just decided that they are the problem and apparently they’re going to make their lives a living hell until either they leave or something changes. But this couple are in a horribly difficult position because there is nothing they can do to change. At least if they had left dog poop around they could be more proactive – but they’re not those people. They are in a position where it seems like they just have to put up with those constant accusations.

However, the reality is that they don’t have to live like this. By keeping a record of the instances of harassment, the accusations, and any evidence they can muster, they can make a case for this person to be either evicted, or at least cautioned for harassment. Because this is absolutely not acceptable – and with the other neighbours who know that they’re no problem at all on board, it shouldn’t be too hard to convince the building management exactly who the problem is.
