Her Sister Moved Back Home and Stole Her Entire Closet—Then Their Mom Told Her “Tough Luck”

Did you ever share a room with a sibling?

I used to share a room with my sister. It wasn’t always easy. Actually, I was comically glad when she left and I had the room all to myself.

But in our case, we always communicated what we wanted and needed.

In this case, a 17-year-old shares that her sister moved back into their house recently after graduating college and ended up taking over the closet, and yet, she doesn’t feel like saying anything, despite it bothering her.

She’s one of six siblings who are all close in age, so she’s spent her entire life sharing bedrooms, belongings, and just about everything else.

Should she say anything?

AITA: My sister (22) moved back into our house recently after graduating college and has completely taken over my (17f) closet with her clothes.

Hello, I am one of six children, all of whom are very close in age.

I am #5 in the lineup and am the third girl. I have two older sisters (#1 and #2 in the age lineup), two older brothers (#3 and #4 in the age lineup), and one younger brother (#6).

I say this to say that I have spent my entire life sharing and that I have no problem doing so.

Also: my siblings are the absolute best people in my life. I adore all five of them.

This is not me trashing on my sister, this is mostly me asking if I’m in the wrong for being upset, like my mom has told me I am.

They’re a cheery family! She feels bad about feeling bad.

Upon my sister graduating (yay, very proud) she has moved home and is going to be living here for some time while she saves money and finds a job pertaining to her major.

All great things. Except for the fact that we now have to share a closet.

This wouldn’t have to be a bad thing, as it’s a big closet (walk-in with storage and shelving and room to hang stuff and a large dresser with drawers for clothes), and I am perfectly happy to share with her.

But, instead of equally allocating the space and paying attention to the very clear and also very strict organization in it, she decided to move all of my clothes around and shove them into the very corners of every rack, steal my hangers, and move all of her clothes in.

It feels a bit like Harry Potter and Dudley.

Not great things, of course.

I complained (and cried, I’m very sensitive and slightly neurotic about stuff like this) to my mom about how upset it made me and how bothered I was that the space’s organization was ruined and I couldn’t reach any of my stuff without having to move all of her stuff.

She told me that this was a me problem that I had to get over, and that my sister had just packed up her whole life so I needed to give her some grace.

Thinking about it makes me literally, like, irrationally angry and also makes me cry.

Is she in the wrong for feeling bad?

I haven’t said anything to my sister and don’t really plan to, because I’m trying to be passive and understanding of her moving, but I’m so upset about the change to my system.

Please tell me if I’m in the wrong for complaining to my mom about being upset about the closet being messed up, and for being angry about this in general!

Also, don’t be mean about my sister or imply that she’s like a bad or mean person.

I think that we just view this and cleaning/organizational things very differently, and that what is a big deal to me is nothing to her.

AITA?

All the ‘being overly nice to siblings’ thing is bothering me. It’s okay to be upset sometimes. What did Reddit think?

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

She can deal with this in many different ways, but being silent and overly nice when she’s so upset is not going to help her.
