His Lifelong Friend Promised He’d Be There For His Grandmother’s Burial, But Then Ghosted Him Completely

Loyalty is supposed to show up loudest during the hardest moments, not disappear the second it’s actually needed.

One man had grown up with his best friend practically embedded in his own family, including a close bond with his grandmother. So when he invited his friend to her funeral, it felt like a given.

But that promise shattered the day of the service, when his friend prioritized handling a parking ticket over showing up.

So when he called his friend out, a string of unanswered texts and total radio silence felt like the end of the friendship.

Keep reading for the full story.

AITA for being mad my best friend didn’t come to my nanas funeral

My best friend grew up with me and my grandmother. To make a long story short, when her health got bad, he said he’d be at the funeral, exact word being “Yes, of course” (proof in my camera roll).

But when the time actually came, the reality was quite different.

A few weeks pass and she passes, and the days of her service and burial arrive. I asked when he was showing up once I got to the funeral home, and the response was, “Idk man, I think I wanna try and figure my parking ticket out” (possibly not word for word, but close as I can remember).

I responded with, “Bro, it’s her funeral.”

With the convo happening on Snap, I can see him reading it. We both sit in chat with no response from him for a minute or two, and then I responded with, “Just do what you’re doing.”

He can’t get over how upset he is at his friend.

I’m absolutely livid at that point.

The next day rolls around (the day of her burial), and I sent him a text saying, “I assume you’re not coming to the burial either?” No read, no response.

Now he fears their relationship may be damaged for good.

Haven’t spoken since, and we only communicate at this point through streaks. I don’t know if I wanna even be around the fella for a few weeks, because I know I can get when I’m angry.

I guess I’m just trying to figure out if I’m validated in my feelings.

If his friend made that commitment, he should follow through.

What did Reddit have to say?

This user seems like they’re kind of letting the friend off the hook.

There’s something to be said for loyalty in friendships.

Maybe he just shouldn’t trust this friend with anything important in the future.

This friend had weeks of warning and he even agreed to attend in writing.

Reading the message and staying silent for two full minutes before responding with nothing at all says more than a flimsy excuse ever could.

A promise is supposed to mean something, especially between friends.
