She’s Renting A Room From Her Aunt, But Another Tenant’s Filthy Living Conditions Are Pushing Her To Leave

Some people tend to be more concerned about cleanliness and organization than others. While I don’t believe that everything has to be perfectly clean and put away at all times, there are definitely limits to what is acceptable when it comes to a messy home.

In this story, one roommate’s room is well beyond what’s acceptable. In fact, his room is so awful that it’s not only messy but also smells awful and even has roaches crawling out from under the clutter.

I can’t imagine living next to a roommate with a room that awful, but the person who wrote this story finds herself in that exact situation.

Keep reading to find out why she’s wondering if she shouldn’t be complaining to her landlord, who happens to be her aunt.

AITA for complaining to my landlord/aunt because of my roommate?

I live in my aunt’s house but I basically rent a room in her house. I couldn’t find any other place since I can’t afford to get an apartment yet.

My aunt is nice and all but I cannot stand how she lets the room next to mine rent it to someone with zero sense of hygiene.

She’s not kidding about how bad this room is.

This person’s room is a whole garbage. Inside his room there’s pile of trashes, empty cans, and empty chips. His room has carpet and he doesn’t have a bed but only sleeps on the carpet with a few pillows, but he has a freaking whole PC gaming set up.

His walls are actually decorated with vinyl planks and some led but oh lord the trash, the smell, i even saw roaches crawling out of his room.

Everytime he goes out and uses the bathroom, he leaves his door a little open and the stank coming out of his room is unimaginable. I can’t breathe walking past his door, and i cant even breathe at times when the smell travels to my room, travels to the living room, and basically everywhere that he goes to he leave his awful scent.

But the situation continues…

I brought this up to my aunt which is the landlord and she only said she’ll talk to him.

So many time has it been that the other room mate, which is one of my family and hers too has complained about the smell but she hasn’t done anything at all.

The only thing she said is he probably doesn’t smell himself at this point now or he could have some medical issues.

This sounds awful!

I have tried everything just to deal with it. I spent my money on odor blockers, sprays, plug in scents, diffusers but it’s really not doing anything.

I wake up at time because I smell the other room and it’s not a nice way to wake up specially if you got woken up by the scent of garbage.

At some days it’s not bad when he keeps his door shut but the moment he opens it walks to bathroom, I can smell it immediately and it ruins everything I’m doing.

Then there’s the shared bathroom…

There were a couple incidents that he used the bathroom and didn’t flush the toilet, the seat had traces of his hair and dirt, and there was few times where he showered and the floor had so much dirt if i could call it.

The other roommates have to deal with that and I have to deal with cleaning, spraying, making sure things are clean.

By the way, this person has been renting her place for almost 10 years I think and I just moved in like 2 years ago.

I don’t really care about longevity but I honestly think that this person needs to go or at least something.

You’d think the landlord would be concerned.

I have concerns regarding this house specially that it has roach infestation now.

I probably complain too much acting like this is my house but the truth is I’m trying to move out as soon as I can.

It’s just currently it’s so hard to deal with this specially when the landlord isn’t doing anything about it.

Roaches in the room because of the mess and stench are definitely a red flag. It’s crazy that her aunt doesn’t care. I couldn’t live next to a roommate whose room was that bad!

Let’s see what Reddit suggests.

This person doesn’t think the aunt will ever do anything about the problem.

The aunt should care. I get that it’s a family member, but she should force him to hire someone to come in and clean up the room or hire a pest control service or something! I’m surprised she’d be okay with a room in her house being in such an unlivable condition.

That truly sounds awful. It grosses me out just thinking about it. She needs to move.
