There comes a time in everyone’s life where they have to break away from their parents and do their own thing.

And, as you can probably imagine, it’s a lot harder to do that in some families than it is in others because everyone’s situation is unique.

In today’s story, a man who is almost 20-years-old believes that it’s time for him to finally have some independence from his mother and his brothers…

But his decision isn’t going over well with everyone.

AITA for refusing to stay at my brother’s houses for 2 weeks while my mom goes to Nigeria?

“I (19,m) live with my mom.

She is traveling to Nigeria for two weeks. Instead of letting me stay home, she wants me to split the two weeks between my two older brothers’ houses.

​Last year, she did the same thing and I complied. But it made me realize how behind I am compared to my peers.

This wasn’t an easy thing to learn…

My mom completely coddles me.

When I ask her to teach me to some cook she says it’s “too hard for me.” So I ended up learning most my cooking from Youtube.

Last year, my brothers heavily complained because I didn’t know how to do laundry or clean a toilet. I literally had to learn from YouTube because my mom always did it for me.

I am smart, in my third year of college, but I feel like I lack basic survival skills.

This isn’t a bad idea…

​I want to stay home for these two weeks to finally force myself to learn the foundations of living alone (cooking, managing a household, etc.).

Plus, moving to my brothers’ houses disrupts my routine I won’t be able to go to my gym for three weeks, play my games, or see my friends.

I love my brothers but last time I stayed with them I felt isolated trapped in my room since there’s not a whole lot to do but I understand how that could be my fault.

He feels bad for causing his mom stress.

​My mom thinks I’m being difficult, and I worry I’m stressing her before a massive trip.

But I feel like if I don’t stand my ground now, I’ll be 23 or 24 and completely helpless when I move out.
