Family obligations and partner obligations don’t always line up neatly.

A man hoping to reconnect with extended family he hadn’t seen in years soon found the perfect opportunity: a reunion happening just before he and his family were about to relocate.

But the real problem was that the timing put him on a short trip away from his pregnant wife. She wasn’t exactly on board with the plan, even with a low-risk pregnancy and backup support arranged.

Balancing two kinds of loyalty rarely feels simple in the moment.

AITAH for wanting to attend family event, leaving my 30 week pregnant wife behind

Every year my family has a reunion where around 30 of us get together and do some kind of activity and have a meal afterwards.

I’ve had to skip the last couple as we live abroad and have had our son 2.5 years ago and it didn’t line up with our schedule.

So as they continued to grow their family, scheduling continued to be a big issue.

We’re expecting our 2nd child later this year and we will be flying to my wife’s side of the family (13 hour flight) a week after said reunion.

We will be staying there for well over half a year, during which I will not be seeing any of them.

His wife isn’t interested in attending, and by his account, the pregnancy is chugging along fairly well.

My wife has understandably no interest in tagging along and would be with our son and her mom, who helps with childcare etc, in our house, whilst I’d be on a 2 day trip, ~4 hr flight away, to see my family.

No complications in the pregnancy thus far.

But still he wonders if it’s wrong to leave her.

From what I’m reading there’s a minuscule chance of something going astray in my absence during this stage, but if something was to happen I would have friends that can be on call during this time to help out.

My wife is not excited about me wanting to leave her behind whilst she’s this pregnant, AITAH for wanting to go anyway?

Having to navigate two sets of expectations is never easy.

There needs to be some degree of reciprocity according to this user.

Surely his wife has other people she could call in an emergency besides just her.

Seeing family needs to be a priority too.

There’s not a solid right and wrong here. It just goes to show how easily two reasonable priorities can create conflict.

It makes sense that the husband misses years of family connection, but it also makes sense that his wife fears being left behind in a vulnerable moment.

What this couple really needs to do is put their heads together and figure it out.
