She Just Wanted to Keep the Hotel Cool—Then an Outraged Guest Accused Her of Causing Global Warming

Customer service jobs tend to give you a front-row seat to a very specific type of person, the kind whose frustration seems less about actual issues and more about needing somewhere to funnel their unbridled rage.

One hotel employee recently ran into a prime example with a peculiar guest staying at his hotel.

This persnickety guest left two separate reviews, both fixated entirely on how cold the hallway air conditioning was during the height of summer.

His frustration deepened after a staff member explained, reasonably, that the A/C operates because it’s summertime, a response he deemed “unacceptably flippant” before launching into accusations of wasted energy and actively contributing to climate change.

You’ll want to keep reading for this one.

Guest appalled at the A/C being on in the summer

Customer service has taught me that some folks are simply ‘fit to be upset.’

That is, whatever they’re mad about, they’re not changing their minds. You can even reason that they maybe want to be upset about it because their level of determination seems impenetrable.

This is one such individual.

This employee sets the scene for one particularly difficult customer.

“Mr. Midsomer” visited us for just one night.

Despite his relatively short stay, we clearly made a big impression on him, as he left not just one but two separate reviews: one within our internal surveys and another posted to our corporate site.

His complaint? Well, it was pretty unbelievable.

Across both, he highlighted the same key issue, the A/C was too cold. “It was so cold, my wife and I were freezing. It required a heavy sweater or jacket, neither of which we had, with it being the middle of summer.”

Ah, interesting. So, he admits it’s the middle of summer. Fair enough.

The review then got even stranger.

The second part of it is even better. According to him, he brought his concern to the desk, and whomever he spoke to was “unacceptably flippant,” as they apparently responded: “Well, sir, it is currently summertime, and we need the A/C on.”

That response really set this customer off.

He then went on a short rant about how such a response proves that we’re wasteful, we’re wasting money and unnecessary amounts of energy to cool the building down to an “unbearable degree,” in addition to contributing to climate change as a result.

This customer clearly wasn’t an equal opportunity complainer.

The most intriguing thing about this is that he was complaining about the hallway A/C. Specifically the one on the floor he was staying on.

No idea if he was camped outside his own room for an extended period, but clearly it was enough that we apparently almost delivered him a nasty case of hypothermia.

“You can’t please everyone.”

This customer can’t be serious.

What did Reddit make of this laughable situation?

This commenter points out that the customer’s “bad” review will likely have the opposite impact as he intended.

This user agrees that a hotel room can, in fact, be “too cold.”

People have famously different standards on what they consider to be a comfortable inside temperature.

That being said, an ultra-cold hotel room is the height of comfort for some people.

All nonsense aside, there’s something almost impressive about the guest’s commitment here. Despite only staying one night, he dedicated a considerable amount of fervor towards the temperature of a hallway he technically didn’t even have to stand in.

Calling someone “unacceptably flippant” for stating the obvious fact that A/C runs in summer is peak main character energy.

This customer clearly doesn’t know how to pick his battles.
