Sometimes there will be moments in life that test even the strongest of friendships. Because let’s be honest, we all disappoint or hurt one another every once in a while, and even though we might always strive to show our friends the love, support and care they deserve, we’re all human – we all make mistakes.
But in strong friendships, these little bumps in the road can be easily smoothed out. With time and some honest conversation – in which both parties calmly explain their point of view and then make efforts to apologise and reconcile – resentments can be avoided, leading to a long-lasting friendship. In many cases, a simply apology will even suffice.
Unfortunately for the guy in this story, the mistake was all his – and yet he’s still mad at his friends for it. And naturally, they’re not taking it so well.
Read on to find out what happened here.
AITA for lashing out at my friends because they didn’t check up on me which lead to me missing an exam?
I (21, male) am in my third year of university. I have a small friend group of four (21 to 22, all male) including me. I’m pretty introverted and have always struggled making friends, so these are basically the only people at uni I’d actually call close friends.
Before every exams, we normally meet outside the hall about fifteen minutes before and go in together. It’s not some rule but we’ve done this every exam day.
A few weeks ago, we were writing our midterm exams for the semester. The midterm timetable was on a PDF and the times for each course varied day to day depending on other programs using the particular exams hall.
I misread the time for a paper and thought it was at 12:30pm when it was actually at 11:30am. Completely my mistake.
Let’s see what happened as a result of this mistake.
I got to campus at around 9:45am and went to the library to revise, because I thought I had loads of time.
At 12:05pm I got a call from a girl in my class asking where I was, and why I hadn’t written the exam. I barely talk to this girl. We’ve probably had a handful of conversations in three years, so I knew she was being serious.
Somehow, she had noticed I wasn’t present and finished early just to call me. I rushed over but there were only about eighteen minutes left and the invigilator refused to let me in.
This is serious, as the midterms form a big part of our overall end of semester results.
And though he accepts his mistake, he blames his friends in part too.
I know missing the exam was my fault. I’m not blaming my friends for me reading the timetable wrong.
What bothers me is that all three of them were at the exam hall before the paper like usual and none of them called or texted me when I didn’t show up.
When I asked them about it afterward, they said they assumed I was just running late. But I’m never late for exams, so to me that should’ve been more reason for them to check up.
They said they were stressed about the exam and that they aren’t responsible for keeping track of me. Which again, I agree with. But it hurt because it felt like someone I barely knew cared more than they did.
Read on to find out how things are with his friends now.
Since then I’ve pulled back from the group a bit. I still talk to them and hang around sometimes, but I’ve stopped going out of my way for them as much.
They noticed and yesterday we had a big argument about me being salty for something that isn’t their fault.
Am I wrong for telling them it was ****** of them to not have at least texted to check up on me?
AITA?
The truth is, this guy knows the answer: missing the exam was his mistake.
As a result, he shouldn’t really be blaming his friends – but it is also understandable that he would be confused that at least one of them wouldn’t have been concerned enough to text.
It’s not their duty of course, but it might tell you something about the friendship.

Let’s see what folks on Reddit made of this.
This person thought he should take this as a lesson and move on.

While others thought that he shouldn’t let those feelings affect his friendships.

Meanwhile, this Redditor thought that his feelings were misdirected.

It must be really frustrating and upsetting to know that his mistake could have led to him failing the course. Honestly, when you’re having to read from a big PDF with a list of very similar timings, this could be quite an easy mistake to make. And it is just that: a mistake. The lesson? Make sure to check and double check carefully, especially when it’s with something as important as exams.
Whether or not this is going to affect his friendships going forward depends on whether he is going to keep holding this against his friends. Because sure, it’s a little odd that they weren’t at all concerned that someone who is never late wasn’t there, but the truth is that it was not their responsibility. They could have messaged to check up on him, but they were probably stressed and anxious about their own exams.
It wasn’t their job to deal with this.
