People should respect boundaries when staying in someone else’s home.
The following story involves a woman who welcomed a friend into her house and told her to “make yourself feel at home.”
She noticed that her friend repeatedly used her belongings without asking.
She initially did not mind because they got along well and she was relaxed about things.
But after it happened several times, she knew she had to do something about it.

AITA For Trying To Set Boundaries
I’m honestly not sure if I’m being unreasonable here.
A friend of mine has been staying over at my place quite a bit lately.
At first, I didn’t mind because we get along really well.
But recently, I’ve started feeling like they’re taking advantage of how relaxed I am about things.
This woman politely asked her friend to at ask permission first before using her things.
The other day, I came home after a long day and noticed that they had used some of my stuff without asking.
It wasn’t anything expensive or particularly important, but it bothered me because it’s happened several times now.
I brought it up and said I’d appreciate it if they asked before taking or using my things.
They got defensive and said I was making a big deal out of nothing.
And that friends shouldn’t have to ask permission for every little thing.
Her friend accused her of being controlling and sensitive.
I told them that wasn’t what I was saying.
I just wanted them to respect my boundaries, especially since they’re staying in my home.
They ended up saying I was being controlling and overly sensitive. Now, I’m wondering if I actually am.
I genuinely don’t care about the particular item they used.
It’s more about the fact that I’ve mentioned it before, and they keep doing it.
So, AITA for being annoyed and asking them to stop?
Yikes! What was supposed to be a simple request turned into a huge conflict.
I don’t think OP was being unreasonable. In fact, she was simply asking for basic respect in her own home.
If anyone is being overly dramatic here, I think it’s her friend who could have just agreed with the request.
