Woman Worried Her Roommate’s Puppies Weren’t Ready to Be Rehomed—Then Speaking Up Put Her Own Living Situation at Risk

When you’re moving away from the house you were raised in for the first time, there will likely be a lot of emotions to feel. For some there is nothing more than excitement about the freedom of living alone or with other folk your own age, either in the same town or city or somewhere far away. There’s nothing like those first steps into adulthood, so it’s no wonder that excitement is key here.
But for other folk nerves or even a touch of grief are common. There’s nothing wrong with any of these feelings (or any others, for that matter) even if you are genuinely happy or excited about moving away. After all, you’re saying goodbye to a big part of your past, the certainty and predictability of the life you had before, and moving into new, unknown territory.
That’s enough to make anyone feel daunted.
For the young woman in this story, moving out felt logical since she was able to move in with a friend at a very low monthly cost. But down the line things got rocky, leading to her ready to get away.
Read on to find out what happened.
Am I overreacting for deciding to move out after a roommate threatened my living situation?
I’m eighteen and female, and I live with my best friend (nineteen, female). We moved into a small house on her parents’ property back in October.
She doesn’t pay rent, I pay $100 a month.
On December 7th, her dog had puppies. On January 11th, she texted me saying she had already given two of them away and was taking them to someone that night.
I was really concerned because they were only five weeks old, and from everything I’ve seen and read, puppies aren’t supposed to leave their mom until at least eight weeks.
Let’s see what happened when she raised the issue.
I told her that and said it could cause developmental or health issues. We ended up arguing over text.
I wasn’t trying to control anything, I was just worried about the puppies. She kept saying she’d done this before and they were fine.
During the argument, she said: “If you continue to speak to me this way, I’m going to ask you to leave my house.”
That really caught me off guard. Regardless of the puppy situation, threatening to kick me out during an argument crossed a line for me.
Read on to find out how she responded to the threat.
The next day, I told her I’d be moving out by February 1st. I explained that I don’t feel comfortable living somewhere where my housing can be used as leverage when we argue.
She replied saying that’s fine because she feels like I talk down to her and make her feel dumb. I didn’t respond because I didn’t want to turn it into another fight.
So I guess my question is, am I overreacting for being upset about the puppies being re-homed at five weeks, and am I overreacting for deciding to move out after she threatened to kick me out during an argument?
It’s clear that her concern for the puppies was genuine – and honestly, well-placed too. The puppies need their mom, and to give them away earlier than the recommended eight weeks can be quite dangerous for everyone involved.
Maybe it’s understandable that she misconstrued the tone of concern in the message, after all, it is difficult to convey tone in text messages in the same way that we would in real life.
But using the home as leverage is completely unfair, and could even be considered an abusive act – after all, taking away a person’s place to live over a small argument is a truly horrible thing to do.
Let’s see what the Reddit community made of this.
This person thought that she was right to move out.

And others encouraged her not to live with friend in the future.

Meanwhile, this Redditor reiterated that her advice about the puppies was absolutely right.

It really sucks that her friend was so defensive about the puppies. Either she knows that she was doing the wrong thing for the pups and their mom and she was choosing to do it anyway, or she doesn’t like to hear that she’s wrong. Either way, both are red flags – and threatening her friend’s living situation only made the flags redder. That’s no way to treat a friend at all, regardless of whether or not you like what she’s saying.
In the end, if the puppies suffer she might end up with even more recourse from the pet owners that she gave them to, and this could even land her in legal trouble. In fact, in some countries the eight week rule is a legal requirement, meaning that she could be even convicted of animal cruelty or neglect for letting the puppies go younger. But even if this isn’t enforced where she lives, her responsibility is a moral and ethical one – after all, most veterinarians recommend that the puppies stay with their mom for ten to twelve weeks to develop before being rehomed.
But there’s a pattern here, isn’t there. She wants those pups out of her home quickly, just as she’s threatening the roof over her supposed friend’s head too.
In both cases, that’s just cruel.
