Trust between a parent and adult child is supposed to come with certain boundaries, but some parents are determined to cross them.

In this story, a woman handed her phone to her mother during a wedding dance, only to glance over mid-song and catch her actively snooping through private message.

What followed wasn’t a quiet conversation, it was an abrupt confrontation in front of a room full of other wedding guests, followed by accusations, silence, and a mother still convinced she’d done nothing wrong.

You’ll want to keep reading for this one.

AITAH for getting mad at my mom at a wedding for snooping through my phone?

For some context, I am 27F, and this was happening at a wedding. My mom has always been a bit controlling and she dislikes all my relationships/guys I date.

So she soon found herself at an event with her mother.

We were at the wedding because my godfather (a family friend) invited us.

When there was a time for some slow dances, he asked my mom for a dance, so I was also there and watched and filmed a bit.

Afterwards, he asked me to dance. I had no pockets and there was nowhere to leave my phone, so I handed my phone to mom, face down.

And this is where the drama really started.

My fault is that I had not enabled that feature to hide the message previews (because I hadn’t felt the need for it before).

A few dances in, as we do a turn I notice my mom scrolling on my screen. I get mad and tell my godfather something (but no one can really hear over the music), so to everyone it looked like I very abruptly dumped him, went over to mom and snatched the phone from her hand.

She confronts her mother directly.

I asked why she was reading my messages and she said I just gave it to her like this; I reply that I gave it to her face down and now it was face up.

She said, “It buzzed so I wanted to see what you got.”

I got mad and went to my table.

Her mother wasn’t a fan of this reaction at all.

She then started texting me that I had overreacted and shamed our family in public, that everyone saw how I am and that I know the relationship I am in is not okay, so that is why I don’t want her to see (guy I am currently dating just sent some random messages about cooking dinner, but it could have been something “spicier,” if I were unlucky).

She starts feeling like she needs to set a stronger boundary with her mother, which only made her mother more angry.

I told her that I will not budge on this, that my phone is my private space and this is my boundary. She is extremely mad at me and hasn’t spoken to me since, not even saying bye when they dropped me off at home.

I later found my godfather and apologized for the situation, he said that he also saw her snooping and that he understands.

Now she looks back and wonders if she took things too far.

So, AITAH for causing a bit of a scene because my mom was snooping through my phone in public?

I feel like I do not want to apologize to her, she obviously feels she has done nothing wrong as well.

It’s easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment.

What did Reddit have to say?

Her mother was clearly acting out of line.

For this commenter, it just comes down to the blatant disrespect.

“It buzzed so I wanted to see” is an insane thing to say to your adult child.

Whether someone else’s wedding was the right time and place for a fiery confrontation is neither here nor there, but her mother needed to know her behavior just wasn’t okay.

Handing someone your phone for two songs shouldn’t come with a deep dive into your private text messages.
