One of the weirdest parts of planning for your wedding has to be putting together a wedding registry. Because while a lot of folk nowadays avoid the whole weirdness of it by just asking for money, or not making any suggestions or requests with regards to gifts at all, there are still plenty of traditional folk out there who expect that you have a gift registry, to ensure that they can buy something that you want for your wedding.

So naturally, you have to put together a big wish list of things you’d be happy to have in your home. It serves a good purpose, since it reduces the number of weird things you might end up being given, but honestly, it can feel like writing a Christmas list as a kid. With that in mind it can be really fun, especially if it means a day out dreaming of all these things with your partner. But for the bride in this story, the experience was very different to that.

Read on to find out why.

A bride’s pesky family’s opinions

I walked into my registry department a little late today, but I was able to catch more or less the entire ordeal as my coworker was registering a bride for her wedding registry.

For some reason the bride had five other people with her (sisters, grandmother, mom) who all had something to say.

They constantly cut my coworker off mid-sentence with a question that would have been answered if they had waited for her to finish that sentence.

Let’s see how this family experience went down.

When I settled in, the bride was looking at casual china. She said, “Oh look at this pattern. I like it. It’s so pretty!”

Her sister chimed in, “It’s okay, but I’d register for this pattern. It’s much nicer!” Then another sister said, “My pattern is better than THAT. Look at it!”

The grandmother then said, “How much is it? Oh look at that price, it’s too much money. How many settings do you get for that price? One? Back in my day, it was NOT that much!”

The mom replied, “Maybe you should go to [discount store] instead.”

But the bride knew which ones she liked.

The bride said, “Oh…but I like these…” but her grandma told her, “It’s too much money. Don’t put it on your registry. Get a cheap brand instead.” She then asked my co-worker, “Do you have more brands out on the floor?”

My co-worker told her, “Yes we have a lot more brands to look at. When you go out to scan on the floor, you’ll see the right he–”

The grandma interrupted to say, “Let’s go look at cheaper ones.” Cue the bride and her entourage leaving my department.

My coworker told me how terrible they had been to the bride. Telling her to not register for something because it’s “too much money” or that it’s not THEIR taste. The poor bride couldn’t get a word in!

Then, this retail worker happened across the same party again later.

I walked out on the floor to help other registered couples and happened to walk by the miserable bride again. She was saying, “Oh look at this tablecloth! I really like it. Mom, look!”

Her grandmother then said, “How much is it? Is it big enough for your table? Are you getting a new table? My table is [measurements] and I buy a [specific size] tablecloth and it fits perfectly. Look at this pattern, it’s much nicer!”

Her mom agreed, “You can get the same thing at a dollar store. Don’t put that on your registry.”

Her sister changed the subject, “Look at these glasses! Put these on your registry!” And her other sister told her, “I put these plates on my registry, get these instead. They’re nicer.”

Yikes. This horrible situation got this retail worker thinking.

And this went on for another hour or two and by the end the bride was shaking.

She would barely speak to my coworker because her family did all of the talking…

Moral of the story: either bring the person you’re marrying in to pick out items for your home, do it alone, OR bring one person for support…

You really have to feel sorry for this poor bride.

Nothing on her registry was really going to be her own, clearly, because her family were so dominant.

Even worse for her partner who didn’t get any kind of a say at all.

Let’s see what folks on Reddit made of this.

Lots of people felt really sorry for the bride-to-be.

This poor bride really got stuck in the middle with her registry. And with a domineering grandmother, and cost-cutting mom, and two sisters who were only interested in what they liked, she would have had to be a strong character to really get her own voice heard in this situation. Unfortunately, this was probably a lifelong pattern of not really being able to speak up for herself, and given how much they walked all over her, you have to wonder if any part of her wedding will really be for her.

It’s fine for other people to have strong opinions, but it’s about how they assert them. If mom and grandma didn’t like certain things that she wanted to put on her registry? Well, they didn’t have to buy them for her. But it should have been for this bride and her partner to choose what they wanted to be on the registry, not the things that mom and grandma think are nice or value for money. Because sure, they might have valid opinions, but really the bride’s opinion is the only one that really matters here – and sadly, that was the one that mostly went unheard.
