Imagine calling in sick to work. What would you do if you got a call from your supervisor on your personal phone?
Here’s what you should do. Don’t answer it. Answering it won’t be a good idea. It’s a sick day. You’re not supposed to be working, and answering that phone is technically working.
In this story, one woman who works in foster care was in this situation, and she made a huge mistake. When the phone rang, she answered it.
Now, she wants to quit her job. Is she overreacting?
Keep reading for all the details.
AIO Boss called me in on a sick day
I work in foster care. This morning, I let my supervisor know that I’d be taking a sick day. No issues there.
Well, fast forward to about 3:15pm and my supervisor’s supervisor called me on my personal phone.
I stupidly answered and when she asked how I was, I said “fine” then explained that I’ve had a cough and sore throat all weekend so I called out to spare everyone else from my germs.
This doesn’t seem like a good idea.
She thanked me for being considerate, then pointed out that I am on-call this week and asked me to pick up some kids from the office (30 min from me) and drop them off at their new foster home.
I guess it doesn’t matter that I’m sick.
A few of my coworkers have quit in the past couple weeks, so everyone that’s left has double the case loads with no relief in sight.
She’s thinking about quitting.
I’ve only been at this job for about 8 months but I started passively applying for jobs a few weeks ago.
This situation just makes me want to leave even more.
My boss will be out for five weeks starting next week, and I’m hoping to be gone before she gets back. But AIO?
I totally think she should find another job. It sounds like a really bad idea to ask someone who is sick to pick up foster kids. They are way too understaffed. Let the supervisor pick up the kids.
Let’s see how Reddit responded.
She really shouldn’t have answered the phone.

Another person thinks the boss is pushing too far.

This person thinks she’s clearly not overreacting.

As far as that last comment, I don’t think she really is “fine.” I don’t think it sounds like she called in sick for no reason it all. I assume she said she’s “fine,” because that’s the normal response when someone asks you how you are.
“How are you?”
“Fine.”
It’s almost a reflex.
She clarified that she’s actually not feeling well though.
She really messed up by answering the phone.
