Working full-time doesn’t always guarantee financial stability.
In this story, a man is preparing for his annual review but feels frustrated about his situation.
He was expecting a raise, but it is being offset by higher insurance premiums and added costs for coverage.
Meanwhile, rent, food, and other expenses continue to rise, making it harder to keep up.
If you were in his shoes, would you also feel the same way? Read the full story below to find out more.
I’m not even excited about getting an annual pay raise anymore
I am due for my annual review soon. I am kind of wondering what the hell is even the point.
I got an email last week, saying my health insurance premium is going up by 20 percent.
My employer will no longer be offering short-term disability and long-term disability. I will have to pay for them. This will probably cost me an extra $50 to $100 per month. Depends on whether I want coverage.
This man was expecting a 4% pay increase.
If I go without it, I risk becoming homeless if I ever get sick or injured.
It could happen if it lasts more than a week.
I am expecting a pay increase of 3.5 to 4 percent. But this will be mostly wiped out by the cost of insurance. It might be entirely wiped out.
These are not astronomical increases by any means.
But all of his expenses were increasing, too.
Everything else is increasing, too. Rent, food, and utilities are goin up. Student loans are increasing. Literally, everything is increasing.
My pay raises each year do not make me wealthier. They only slightly reduce the rate at which I fall behind.
I am being pushed further away from the minimum income needed to be considered middle class.
I do not even know what that means anymore.
He’s starting to feel tired of working full-time.
All I want is something simple. I want to afford to live by myself in a small apartment. I want to eat decent food and get the healthcare I need.
Even the bare minimum standard of living is becoming unattainable.
This is happening despite full-time work.
I am so tired of working hard. I am genuinely trying my best every day. I only walk away with less and less.
I think this is kind of the reality we are all facing now.
Getting a pay raise isn’t always enough because of the rising prices of fuel, food, and even student loans.
I agree with OP that working harder only to get less in return feels exhausting.
