Weddings can sometimes create unexpected tension between friends.
In this story, a woman was invited to her friend’s wedding, but she later found out that her fiancé was not included as a plus-one.
Despite their long-term friendship, the exclusion left her feeling hurt and disappointed.
Now, she’s torn between attending alone or skipping the wedding entirely.
What would you have done in this situation? Check out the full details below.
WIBTA if I declined a wedding invite because my fiancé isn’t invited with me?
My fiancé (25M) and I (27NB) have been together for six years. We are engaged.
My friend (27F) is getting married coming up this fall. She handed me an invite about a month ago that was not an envelope. It didn’t say who it was to.
I used her wedding website to find my RSVP. She didn’t have names logged in.
I asked her then if the invite was just for me or if I have a plus one. I asked if my fiancé was invited.
This person learned that her fiancé wasn’t invited to her friend’s wedding.
At that moment, she said she would have to check with her fiancé.
I didn’t figure that was a big deal. I check my fiancé about things even if they seem like a yes from my perspective.
Fast forward to yesterday, she is talking about her wedding a bit. I wait for a good time to bring it up. I wanted to wait to RSVP until I knew.
When I asked her, she said that her fiancé wasn’t comfortable with my fiancé coming. He didn’t know him well.
They may not know each other well, but they have met.
I do find this odd. I am in a long-term relationship.
I understand that our fiancés haven’t had much time to get to know one another.
My sister, my fiancé, and I hosted the bride at our shared apartment multiple times.
They have actually met multiple times.
I invited both of them to my birthdays for a few years. Only she showed up.
Last year for her birthday, I drove us one hour to Six Flags. I used my bring a friend free pass on her fiancé.
They could worry less about money.
She would have felt better if she wasn’t invited at all.
Yesterday, my mom and stepdad literally hosted her birthday event during their Memorial Day cookout.
They want to save money to have a smaller wedding. Maybe 75 people.
At this point, I would be less insulted if I wasn’t invited at all.
The only people I will really know at the wedding are her, her fiancé, and my sister (she is a bridesmaid). Another friend of ours is also a bridesmaid, and my sister’s boyfriend will also be there.
She felt hurt and insulted.
I don’t want to guilt her into changing the invite. It is her wedding.
I feel hurt and a bit insulted. I keep imagining going by myself.
People might see my ring and ask, “Oh, you’re engaged. Where’s your fiancé?”
I would have to say, “Oh! He wasn’t invited!”
She hasn’t responded to the invitation yet.
Would I be the jerk if I just declined her wedding invite?
I have chatted with her about being there already.
I never officially RSVPed.
