There are few things in life more disappointing than when something you are looking forward to for a long time gets cancelled at the last minute.
What would you do if a family vacation got cancelled at the last moment due to a flight cancellation? That is what happened to the father in this story, so he woke his daughter up to let her know that she had to go to school instead.
His daughter, however, got very upset and said that she couldn’t go to school that day, but he thinks she should attend since the vacation is cancelled.
Personally, I think he should have let her take one day off and then return to school the next day. Read through teh full story below and see what you think he should have done.
AITA FOR MAKING MY DAUGHTER GO TO SCHOOL?
Hello all, let me give some back story first.
A family vacation can be a lot of fun.
The day before this incident happened my wife and I had plans to go for vacation with our 17 year old daughter.
We had let her school know that she would be gone for about a week, as well as told our workplaces we would be taking sick days off for said vacation.
How disappointing.
However, at around 4 AM today our flight was cancelled, for whatever reason. We would of been on the flight at around 2pm if it hadn’t of been cancelled.
So, seemingly since there was no longer a vacation happening, I went to my daughter’s room at around 6 am, to tell her that the vacation was cancelled, and that she needed to get ready for school, but she didn’t get up.
She can’t take a week off school for no reason.
I told her that there was no reason for her not to go, but for some reason she got quite upset and started crying. So, of course I asked her what was wrong, and got the usual teenage quote “You wouldn’t understand, Dad.”
I went to have a quick chat with my wife, and she had a talk with her. Me, still not getting a good enough reason from my daughter to not go to school, got a bit angry.
Some people don’t deal with abrupt changes in plans very well.
I was basically ready for work. As soon as the flight got cancelled I had called my work, unbooked the hotel, etc. I basically treated it like there was no vacation in the first place.
Anyway, so my wife came back from my daughter’s room and she just said that my daughter didn’t want to go to school. Which I already knew?? I probed further untill she just told me my daughter had some ‘personal reasons’.
These are likely just excuses, not the real reason, which is that she was mentally prepared for a vacation, not school.
I got up to talk to my daughter again, this was getting ridiculous by then. She was crying slightly still, which made me feel bad because I honestly don’t think I being a monster about it.
Apparently, she hadn’t ‘plucked her eyebrows’, ‘shaved her legs’, or done her personal stuff that she was supposedly going to do today.
She also has some mental health issues.
So basically, she told me that she was going to feel self concious if she didn’t do that stuff. I told her that’s fine, get up and do it then I’ll drop her at school after, but then she basically told me not her rush her, and that she wasn’t prepared to do it so early.
I really don’t see why she is so upset about it? She was diagnosed with Social Anxiety last year, so has this got to do with that or what?
Honestly, he is reacting to this poorly.
I don’t want to be that idiot who doesn’t respect privacy, but can’t she just get up and do her stuff? You have to get stuff done in life sometimes, it doesn’t matter if you’re uncomfortable.
You’re not going to live in a world where everyone accommodates to you.
AITA??
First of all, why can’t he get on the next flight and still take the vacation? If that isn’t an option, however, giving her a day off of school to mentally adjust seems like the right move.
Let’s see what the people in the comments have to say about it.

This guy thinks he is handling everything about the situation poorly. I agree.

He should be trying to book another flight. Not just giving up on the whole vacation.

Her mental health issues don’t make things any easier.

She is obviously very disappointed and needs some time to adjust.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

Her reaction is completely understandable, but his seems heartless. The fact that he doesn’t even seem to understand why she doesn’t want to go to school today makes it worse.
It is really hard to understand why he gave up so quickly on this vacation, though.
