Privacy means different things to different generations, and that gap can turn into a real family rift fast.
One woman’s brother confided in their mom about a personal, difficult life event, only for their mom to take it a step further by reaching out to his friend and asking them to check in on him.
She called her mom out for overstepping, reminding her that both siblings kept their circles small on purpose and that this kind of exposure wasn’t the support her brother wanted.
But instead of hearing her out, her mom flipped the conversation entirely, declaring she’d simply stop caring altogether.
What started as a conversation about boundaries turned into a guilt trip nobody needed.

AITA because I told my mom “this is why we don’t tell you anything”?
So my brother is going through something very personal and a big life event. It’s making him sad, but he’s dealing with it.
Their mother immediately proved she had zero discretion.
He told my mom a recent event that occurred, and she automatically told me, but then she went and told my brother’s friend “to check on him and show him support.”
And I told her, “This is why we don’t want to tell you anything.”
This direct approach goes against what her brother needs in this moment, so she tells her mother that.
Me and my brother are very private, we keep our circle small, there are things he doesn’t tell me and vice versa.
So I told my mom, “I get you’re trying to be supportive, but that’s not how my brother would like support.”
That’s when their mother does a total 180.
And she says, “I’m just not going to care anymore then.”
So I’m kind of feeling emotionally manipulated, because all of a sudden it goes from “I care so much and I want him to feel love and support” to “I’m not going to care anymore.”
So AITA for telling her that’s not how he would want to be supported? Or was I wrong for telling her something?
This is a tough one.
What did Reddit have to say?
It’s time to stop sharing so much with their mother.

This all comes down to needing attention, at the end of the day.

This woman needs to focus more on what her son actually needs.

This is actually a good teaching moment.

Walking away from care the moment you’re corrected is a huge tell, and Reddit was quick to point that out.
The worst part was that her mom wasn’t even trying to understand why contacting her son’s friend crossed a line. She was too busy making the whole conversation about her hurt feelings.
This mother needs to stop being so manipulative and start being a little more genuine.
