Some disagreements start over something huge, but the one in this story started over an old iPhone.
One teenage girl had kept her old iPhone 5 safely tucked away for years, loving its design enough to never consider selling it, even as technology moved on.
Her dad, who was already planning to replace his iPhone 13 with a newer Samsung model, unexpectedly decided he wanted her old phone too, insisting it would simply make him look “classy” for calls and texts.
When she declined to give it up, he responded by refusing to let her spend any money at all, including the funds she needed to purchase the newest GTA game.
You’ll want to read on for this one.
AITA for not wanting to sell my old phone to my dad?
I have this old iPhone 5. It’s in perfect condition, everything works, and barely any scratches on it.
This person isn’t in a rush to get rid of this item, but soon she faces mounting pressure.
I want to keep it because I really love that phone’s design. Right now I have turned it off and keep it in a safe place.
Now my dad wants that phone, because he is planning on selling his iPhone 13 and using a Samsung A55 instead.
Her dad really has his sights set on this iPhone 5.
But here is the thing: he wants the iPhone 5 to use it for calls and texts.
When I ask him why not use the Samsung, he said he wanted it to look “classy.”
Now she finds herself in a bit of a conundrum.
I refused, but here is the thing, I wanna buy GTA VI but am short on money, and he is refusing to give me any because I didn’t sell him the phone.
For now, I have declined it entirely, and he is refusing to let me spend any money.
AITA for not wanting to sell?
This is a tough situation.

If she’s unwilling to sacrifice, she can’t be too mad about not getting the outcome she wants.

This commenter questions whether this is really worth all the fuss.

To each their own, but this redditor doesn’t really get it either.

Withholding someone’s own money over a phone they’re not even obligated to give up is a pretty dramatic flex for a parent to pull.
“Classy” isn’t a real argument when the actual option on the table is a perfectly functional Samsung model.
Who knew an old iPhone could create such a stir?
