I don’t think anyone who has read about history missed the part where we used to accidentally bury people alive – and honestly, that can serve as pretty decent nightmare fuel for many years.

This woman didn’t get buried alive, but had she not woken up, that would have been the next logical step.

Bella Montoya, 76, was brought to an Ecuadorian hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest and possible stroke. The doctors there declared her dead after trying for a while to resuscitate her.

The family took the body and a death certificate to a funeral home and arranged a wake, but 5 hours into it, the coffin started to rattle.

Her son, Gilberto Barbera, gave details to the Associated Press.

“There were about 20 of us there. After about five hours of the wake, the coffin started to make sounds. It gave us all a fright. My mom was wrapped in sheets and hitting the coffin, and when we approached we could see that she was breathing heavily.”

He and other relatives removed her from the coffin and returned her to the hospital, where she was admitted into intensive care. Her prognosis is uncertain, and her condition remains serious.

The Ministry of Public Health has opened an investigation into the matter, according to a statement.

Here’s hoping they figure it out, and that no one ever has to experience something like that again.
