Everyone deserves to relax in their own home.

The following story involves a woman who lives with her parents. Her sister, with two young kids, visited them.

Everybody in the house, except her, was loud and energetic, so she decided to go to bed early and started reading a book.

However, her mom called her rude and accused her of not wanting to spend time with the kids.

Whoa, seriously? Read the full story below for all the details.

AITA for reading before bed instead of spending time with my niece and nephew?

I (36F) live with my parents (85M and 77F) for financial reasons.

I love my parents. For the most part, I don’t mind living with them.

However, they bicker and argue over the dumbest and littlest things.

My mom has hearing aids. My dad is in denial that he needs them.

The TV is on a lot. The volume is high so they can hear it. The house is just loud.

This woman’s family is generally loud.

When the two of them go out to eat, I gladly stay home.

Just so I can have some quiet calm for a couple of hours.

My sister (45F) is a school teacher. Yesterday, she came over and brought her two kids.

We’ll call them G (11F) and B (7M). My sister and her kids are also generally loud people.

Like any other siblings, the two kids argue. My sister just talks a lot.

She started reading a book before going to sleep.

Normally, I’m a night owl and go to bed between 11 pm and 12 am.

The house was loud with everyone there. I wanted some quiet time.

So around 10pm, I said I was going to bed and said goodnight to everyone.

Recently, I have gotten in the habit of reading before bed.

So, I got in bed, turned my reading light on, grabbed my book, and read a little more than normal.

The book was getting to a good part.

Her niece and nephew went to her room.

Around 10:40, G comes into my room. My cat was in the room with me.

She wanted to say goodbye to her. Shortly after, B comes in, too.

My sister comes upstairs to get the kids. She apologizes to me.

I told her it was ok. I was just doing some reading before bed.

After they leave, my mom comes into my room.

Her mother scolded her for not spending time with the kids.

She says, “You are the rudest person I’ve ever met.

The kids are here and you say you’re going to bed, when you’re actually just reading a book.

They left upset that you would rather read a book and ignore them than spend time with them.”

She threw in the fact that when I go to my cousin’s house about once a week, I stay there until at least 11 pm.

It is true that I stay there a little later, but her house is much calmer than when everyone is at my house.

AITA?

Wanting some quiet time in a loud house is completely reasonable.

OP didn’t ignore anyone on purpose. She just needed a break from all the noise and chaos before going to sleep.

It sounds like her family took it too personally when it really wasn’t about them.

Let’s find out what others have to say about this.
