Her Car Got Towed By The HOA — But She Says Other Cars Park There All The Time Without Getting Towed

While HOAs are awful, it’s even worse when you don’t know what the HOA rules are. How are you supposed to follow all of their picky rules if you don’t even have the option of reading the bylaws? You basically wouldn’t know you were violating a rule until the HOA slapped you with a fine.
Or, in the case of this story, towed your car.
What makes this situation extra annoying is that the person who wrote this story is a renter who didn’t realize they were renting a house in an HOA until after moving in.
Now, without a copy of the bylaws to look at, they’re left even more frustrated than most homeowners.

Forget the HOA – especially the one that towed my car
Whoever the heck HOA member had my car towed is going to wish they didn’t mess with me.
Living in a rental. We weren’t actually told we are part of an HOA.
Never received the CC&Rs. We’ve asked. Still haven’t gotten them.
The HOA actually knows that we don’t have them.
How annoying!
Tonight, I parked my car behind our rental – well, adjacent – on a length of grass at 930pm.
People park here all the time.
Went to see Spider-Man, which was great btw, and then came back after the movie was over to some witch (an HOA board member) had my car towed at 11:30pm.
He does not think this is fair at all.
We have a cul de sac parking lot that states “move every 72 hours or be towed.”
Some car has been parked there for over 2 months hogging 1 of the spots.
Today, there were an excessive amount of parkers all over our street. And my car that is parked adjacent to my rental is freaking towed after being there for 2 freaking hours.
I’m about to throw hands.
Living in an HOA is bad enough, but when you’re renting, it’s even worse because renters don’t always know the bylaws since the landlord is technically the one responsible.
If I were him, I’d move.

Another person agrees that OP needs to talk to the landlord.
Everyone seems to be saying the same thing.
But this person has another suggestion.
The landlord should’ve told the renter that the house was in an HOA and should’ve given the renter a copy of the bylaws. By not doing either, I wonder if there’s any way to get out of the lease, because I know I’d be upset if I accidentally moved into a house in an HOA.
This renter needs to talk to the landlord.
