Boyfriend Saved For Months To Buy The Exact Headphones His Partner Wanted, But She Said The Gift Wasn’t Good Enough

Buying someone exactly what they asked for is supposed to be a safe bet, but that’s not what happened in this story.
One man had spent months carefully saving $300 to surprise his boyfriend with the specific headphones he’d been requesting for ages.
But instead of appreciation, he was met with a flat reaction and the sudden revelation that his boyfriend had actually wanted a newer model. This was information that had, of course, never been communicated.
What followed was an escalating argument about gratitude, effort, and whether wanting acknowledgment for a thoughtful gift counted as making someone’s birthday “about him.”
You’ll want to keep reading for this one.
AITA for returning my boyfriend’s birthday gift after he called it a waste of money?
I (23M) have been dating my boyfriend (25M) for almost three years. We live together and usually have a good relationship, but we’re both stubborn when we argue.
His birthday was a few days ago.
From the start, his boyfriend knew exactly what he wanted as a gift.
For months, he’d been talking about a specific pair of headphones he wanted.
He sent me the exact model multiple times, showed me reviews, and said several times that he wanted them for his birthday.
He acknowledged this was a big financial commitment, but still did his best to save the money.
They’re around $300, which is a lot for us. We’ve been trying to save for a bigger apartment, so I put money aside for a few months to buy them.
But things didn’t go as expected when he opened them.
When he opened them, he looked at the box and said, “You got these?”
I thought he was excited, but then he said, “I thought we talked about getting the newer ones.”
This was news to him.
Apparently, he’d changed his mind recently and wanted a different pair. I didn’t know that.
I reminded him that he’d specifically asked for the ones I bought.
He said, “Yeah, a few months ago.”
I asked if he liked them anyway. He said, “They’re fine.”
He couldn’t hold back his disappointment.
I got upset and told him I’d spent $300 on something he’d been asking for forever and expected him to at least seem grateful.
He said I was making his birthday about me and that he shouldn’t have to “perform gratitude” because I spent money.
I told him I wasn’t asking for a performance. I just wanted him to appreciate the effort.
This started a big fight between them.
He then said, “This is why I hate when you buy me expensive things. You care more about being the perfect boyfriend than actually listening to me.”
That really hurt.
I told him that if he didn’t want them, I’d return them.
He said, “Fine. Return them.”
But when she did just that, he wasn’t happy either.
So I did.
Now he’s furious.
He says I only returned them to punish him for not reacting the way I wanted. I told him I returned them because he said he didn’t want them.
Things continue to heat up.
He claims he never said he didn’t want them, only that he’d rather have the newer version.
Then he said, “You know what? I’d rather you never buy me anything again.”
I responded, “Maybe I won’t.”
Now he says I was being manipulative and throwing the gift back in his face.
He can’t believe his boyfriend is behaving this way.
I think he’s being incredibly ungrateful. I spent months saving for something he repeatedly told me he wanted, and when I gave it to him, he basically complained that it wasn’t good enough.
He thinks I’m overly sensitive and expect people to react exactly how I want.
He starts to second-guess his reaction and turns to Redditor for support.

I admit I was angry and probably shouldn’t have returned the gift immediately. But I also don’t think I should have to keep a $300 gift that he doesn’t even want.
Neither of us has apologized, and we’re barely speaking.
AITA?
Well, that escalated quick.

Maybe it’s time to rethink this entire relationship.

Buying someone exactly what they explicitly and repeatedly asked for is about as thoughtful a gesture as gift-giving gets, which makes the lukewarm reaction even harder to justify.
Money was already tight for this couple, so the fact he went out of his way to save the $300 really says something.
If his boyfriend wanted to change his mind at the last minute, he needed to communicate that instead of waiting for his birthday to throw a temper tantrum over it.
Effort deserves acknowledgment, even when circumstances change.
