Imagine working from home. You’re in a work meeting. Would you feel free to snack on noisy foods during the meeting, or would you refrain from eating anything and stay professional?

In this story, one man oversees and overhears his wife in a work meeting. She’s loudly eating sunflower seeds and popcorn. He thinks this is unprofessional, but she disagrees.

Who’s right?

Let’s read the whole story to decide.

AIO to my wife eating sunflower seeds and popcorn while speaking to her staff and immediate supervisor on the phone?

My wife will eat sunflower seeds while on business calls that I believe require a certain level of professionalism.

Yesterday it was the worst that I’d witnessed.

She was noisily cracking and spitting seeds with loud, exaggerated lip smacking.

He called her out on it.

I asked her if anyone ever asked her if she was eating. I also said it sounded unprofessional.

She became upset and said that it was fine and no one had a problem with it. She said I was applying my standard and it doesn’t have to be my way.

I asked what the standard was and she became more annoyed.

She said it was a me problem.

Here’s more context about her job.

She’s the ranking member of management at her site.

She provides supervision to professionals and two tiers of supervisors.

Is there an expected standard of professionalism or AIO?

If she’s the highest-ranking person in the meeting, her coworkers would probably be too nervous to call her out on any unprofessional behavior. That doesn’t mean it’s okay. They might even gossip about it behind her back.

She probably got upset at her husband because she’s embarrassed and didn’t realize she was being unprofessional. At least, I hope that’s the case. She really shouldn’t be eating like that while in a meeting.

Let’s see if Reddit agrees.

But this person thinks OP should’ve stayed out of it.

I believe that her coworkers are too scared to say anything about OP’s wife’s annoying and unprofessional behavior. They are probably talking about her behind her back.

OP is probably the only one who could bring it up and get away with it. I hope his wife thinks about this later and changes her behavior. She really is being unprofessional.
