Buying a new house comes with plenty of unknowns, and in this story, it was thin walls and a loud bass problem.

One couple discovered their new home shares more than just a wall with the neighbors, thanks to a teenager next door running a JBL PartyBox in the attic for hours at a stretch, several days a week.

The first attempt at a polite conversation quieted things downstairs, at least for a while.

A second, equally polite request bought a few peaceful days before the thumping crept right back in, audible even outside in the garden.

Now the homeowners are at a loss and wondering what to do next.

Noise nuisance from neighbors’ bass

We just bought a house with quite thin walls.

The neighbors have a teenager who regularly (we’re talking hours from 1 to 9 PM, several days a week) uses a JBL PartyBox 300 in the attic.

The homeowners tried to tackle it politely at first.

The first time, after about a month, we politely went over because we could literally feel the bass while sitting on the couch downstairs.

Since then, we haven’t heard it downstairs anymore, but on the first floor, where I work from home, the bass is still clearly audible.

So they tried another time, also to no avail.

So, we went over a second time to ask if they could turn the bass down or even off, because that’s possible with a PartyBox.

That worked for a few days, but now it’s back again. You can even hear the thump outside in the garden.

Now these homeowners are left in a tough spot.

We want to maintain a good relationship with the neighbors and not keep knocking on their door, but we’re starting to go a bit crazy from it.

Why not fight noise with even more noise?

Two polite conversations should be enough to solve a noise problem between reasonable neighbors. The fact that the bass keeps creeping back suggests these neighbors are anything but reasonable.

Bass is one of the most frustrating noises to have to overhear because it’s just so hard to drown out. It’s not some minor annoyance one can just get used to.

Wanting to preserve a good relationship with new neighbors is admirable, but at a certain point, these homeowners have to put their own sanity first.
