Marriage involves compromise, and that really comes into play when doing home renovations.
In this story, a married couple is doing some huge renovations in their backyard including creating an outdoor kitchen.
They initially agreed that the husband would be in charge of the project, but this hasn’t worked out too well. Not only does he not really know what he’s doing, but he’s not even giving his wife’s suggestions the consideration they deserve.
It seems like it would be much better if she were in charge of the project, but currently, she’s not even at home.
After he gave her an ultimatum, she left for a hotel.
Keep reading to find out what drove them apart and if there’s a way to salvage this project and their relationship.
AIO for walking out after my husband told me he’s the “head” of our backyard renovation?
My husband (33M) and I (31F) are currently tackling a massive backyard overhaul, building a deck, landscaping, and putting in an outdoor kitchen.
We usually love doing DIY projects together, but for this one, we agreed he would take the lead because he’s an engineer and wanted to handle the structural planning.
But that decision ended up being a bad idea.
The problem is, “taking the lead” has turned into absolute micro management.
I am the one with the actual hands on building experience (my dad is a carpenter and taught me everything), but my husband is treating me like an unpaid intern.
Every time I suggest something, like a specific layout for the garden beds or a certain stain for the deck, he shoots it down.
He literally made me create a cost-benefit analysis on a spreadsheet just to buy a specific brand of solar lights.
His thoughts about the outdoor kitchen are pretty ridiculous.
The breaking point happened yesterday.
We were planning the outdoor kitchen area. I wanted to build a small brick pizza oven since we got free bricks from a relative.
He looked me dead in the eye and said, “No, a pizza oven will make the smoker feel redundant and ruin the vibe.”
It was the most ridiculous logic I’ve ever heard.
She took his ultimatum literally.
When I pushed back and said he was being unreasonable, he snapped. He told me, “Look, I am the head of this project. If you can’t get on board with my vision, maybe you should leave”
I just stared at him, said “Copy that, boss,” packed up, and drove to a hotel.
It has been four days. He has barely made any progress on his own because he doesn’t actually know how to use the any tools. He’s now texting me saying I’m abandoning him and ruining our summer plans.
AITA for taking his ultimatum literally and walking away?
He needs to apologize and put her in charge of the project. From now on, it needs to be that what she says goes. Otherwise, maybe she shouldn’t come back.

One person asks a good question.

I hope her husband doesn’t always treat her that way or talk to her like that. He truly sounds insufferable.
Her opinion matters just as much as his does, and it sounds like he has no idea what he’s talking about. I completely agree that they should add a pizza oven.
She did the right thing by leaving. She shouldn’t rush back. He needs to apologize and put her in charge.
