That’s what I call humoristic integrity.
If a business is providing resources for people to use, they should follow their protocol regarding said resources.
Hopefully, he learned something from this interaction and will pass it on.
Employees are there to help, but they need to know that you need help first.
Not exactly textbook management, but definitely textbook compliance.
