He Wanted To Do Something Nice For His Ex-Wife’s Birthday, But The Ex’s Boyfriend Doesn’t Think It’s A Good Idea
It was a nice idea.

I think he is just looking for ways to stay in her life.
She made a great decision.
It’s time for her to move on.
He’s being too nice to even consider her suggestion.
